So long debunkers, YouTube to ban "creator-on-creator harassment."

Details are sketchy, but news outlets are reporting that YouTube is in the process of creating new rules that will ban "creator-on-creator harassment." YouTube claims this is not a response to the Steven Crowder/Carlos Maza incident in which the Vox host demanded YouTube ban Crowder from their platform for making fun of him, but that's sure what it looks like.

Though it's not clear yet just what the new rules will entail, it seems to me like it could result in bans for many popular debunker channels (including mine) for responding to or mocking flat earth, Nibiru and many other conspiracy theorists. Going forward I will avoid directly naming any other channels I might be responding to with my videos, in order to hopefully skirt around the edges of the new rules.

Still, many of my older videos directly name and attack certain creators of misinformation on YouTube including Planet X News, BPEarthwatch, WSO and others. If they report my back catalog of videos it's entirely possible I could be completely banned by YouTube. Friends of mine who take a more mocking tone in their debunking videos are very likely to find themselves in violation of the new rules in pretty much every one of their previous videos.

You might be thinking "well you're an official shill and your friends tow the official line on space, so why would they ban you?" Just because my videos provide supporting evidence for NASA on most things does not mean they want to drive traffic to my channel. Quite the opposite in fact, they don't control me, so as far as they're concerned I might do something inconvenient to them at any time. Within YouTube, traffic has been dramatically directed away from my channel since they started openly targeting conspiracy theorists for suppression. Even a pro-science channel like mine is problematic; my friend was the first to film evidence that SpaceX was trying to recover their rocket fairings before that was public knowledge. He essentially leaked a corporate secret by showing the fairings firing nitrogen gas thrusters to control their re-entry into the atmosphere. Even if we debunk flat earth together, we still present a potential threat of leaking secrets the powers that be would rather not have out in the open.

YouTube has steadily been stepping up their level of suppression and censorship in the last few months, and this new rule stands to take it to a whole new level. Expect to see lots of videos vanish for espousing "wrong think," especially if it's directed at another channel on YouTube or even a corporate entity that has a presence on YouTube.

Just to throw a hypothetical out there, remember the Gillette backlash that resulted in thousands of negative comments being deleted from the upload of their "toxic masculinity ad?" What do you think they would make of my bot displaying those deleted comments to show the level of censorship Gillette and YouTube were engaging in? I bet you anything the new rules will be drafted in such a way as to rule that kind of behavior "harassment against another creator" and a bannable offense. Fortunately I've since moved my YouTube comment monitor off of YouTube and onto a Discord server, so even if they ban my channel the bot will continue to work. You can check out the deleted comments from all the channels it's currently monitoring here:
[link to discord.gg (secure)]

Some of you might find this a positive development since it will likely make direct response videos too risky for large channels, but don't be so quick to celebrate. YouTube is doing everything it can to suppress traffic to videos that provide independent coverage of newsworthy events, and they are artificially pushing "authoritative sources" up in the search results and recommendations. I've already seen evidence of these changes manifest in the last couple months as the traffic patterns for my own videos have dramatically changed. YouTube fully admits they are doing this, and now they are instituting new rules that will make it even easier for them to justify banning content creators that criticize others, unless of course those creators are part of the mainstream media or some other "authoritative source."

Nature hates a vacuum.

If they enforce those rules too harshly, the debunkers will just move to some other platform.

Those who were doing it strictly for profit will have to adjust to the new rules, but the really passionate ones will keep doing it somewhere else, because they are addicted to it.

Not sure how to deal with this. But it does prove that various companies aren't strictly profit-oriented as much as they're leftwing-oriented.

Liberals may smugly believe that traditional greed involving money is somehow worse than greed involving power and ideology. Or that politically masturbating to one's liberal biases is somehow not as bad as financially masturbating to one's profit margins.

At the root of that, however, is why dishonesty and weak ethics, which are common among the left, way more than among the right, tends to make liberal/leftwing people and places corrupt and lousy.

Today's shit-stained, debased, frazzled San Francisco, on the other side of Silicon Valley, is a case in point.

It's certainly not what I signed up for; I switched to YouTube after being capriciously banned by both Justin.tv and Ustream during my telescope live streams. At the time, YouTube was just starting to offer a live stream feature and they seemed much less prone to bullshit than the other services. Now I find myself looking for a new service that offers the full array of YouTube's services in a viable format, including a proper API with Python support and live streaming.

No debunking?

There will be nothing left except what we already "know".

Maybe that is a good thing. I won't have to learn anything new.

How much does it cost to run/year free video upload site like YouTube?

Investers raise millions of dollars to charity business and run political campaigns in a matter of weeks

America has thousands of resident multi millionaires , but all we hear is YouTube and Vimeo there is no competition. No one is taking up the task

I remember casino tycoon Sheldon adelson donating 100 million dollars for Republicans in a single check. How about using that kind of money to start a video uploading site

I have two channels which are entirely bot-run, I have bots that upload to both channels daily. YouTube makes that easily possible. I could code a bot with Selenium to work with just about any site, but it wouldn't be officially supported and could get banned if they catch on. I much prefer to use an official API.

Some might think bot automatically equals a bad thing, but not necessarily. In my case I created them to archive daily time lapse videos from various cameras watching the sky as well as generate routine predictions for things like upcoming eclipses.

Live streaming is also an essential part of what I do. I live stream from my telescope about once a month and I plan to up that rate in the near future. I'm also designing a site that will allow viewers to take turns controlling my scope during live streams. I could substitute another video streaming site in for YouTube pretty easily and there are some alternatives out there like DLive, but I don't want to have to spread my videos across multiple platforms. I want one clear winner to emerge that offers a viable alternative to all the major features YouTube currently offers. I haven't found that yet.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77819596

Lots. Bandwidth for high definition and 4k video is not cheap. You have to have a viable business plan for monetizing the views that come to your site, and you have to have a solid plan for funding it while it's in the valley of death before it starts to take off.

If you position yourself as a free speech alternative to YouTube you also better be ready to handle an influx of refugees who are going to start uploading their entire back catalog of videos that they saved before being banned by YouTube. That's going to place serious demands on storage and incoming bandwidth in the site's early days, with no clear way of offsetting the costs associated with those modes of use. A distributed computing solution probably works best to limit the impact of these issues.

You're also going to have to be able to deal with misuse by people uploading copyrighted movies, TV shows, pr0n, and various other videos that may pose legal threats to your site's existence depending on jurisdiction. And oh yeah, new regulations from the EU are going to make it very difficult to fully comply without simply cutting off any EU ip addresses. These are non-trivial problems requiring significant funds and advanced solutions to manage them.

People of the left dominate Silicon Valley/social media, so the herd mentality is strong with people in high tech. With plenty of people running and working for large corporations in general.

Default cultural and political liberalism is a tough nut to crack.

Most people's preconceived notions of leftwing vs rightwing is going to destroy this country.

Even a variety of non-liberals (I won't even call them conservatives) like George Bush Jr and one of his main speechwriters, Peggy Noonan, foolishly believed that rightist sentiments, in order to be made supposedly acceptable, had to be "kinder and gentler" instead of something like more upfront and explicit.

A lot of the internet is similar to the oil or banking industry. Just a few powerhouses controlling everything and making sure the little guy is left helpless with low morale.

Something evil comes this way, and its face is that of a liberal/leftist.
