They may have stopped to help someone who set up a trap by making it look like their car had broken down.
Had someone pull that one on me years ago at night on a desolate road but I sensed the set up and threw them a screwball they did'nt expect. There was the bait car and another car of thugs hidden down the road waiting to pounce.
