Sad story but I wonder if she had an underlying medical condition. When I was a shelter volunteer, I was licked, and bitten, by many creatures. I also pulled ticks off dogs with my fingers. I used natural remedies and only needed antibiotics once.

That was from a tiny feral kitten I was bottle feeding. The bite was nothing more than a pin dot but my finger really blew up fast. I was fine after the antibiotics though.
