If driving down the 101 go west on highway 1 that will take you into FortBragg and drive down highway 1 until you had enough coast head East to Santa Rosa and 101 again. Lots of time is lost driving the coast.

I stay away from Sf but one thing I do take friends to the Point Bonita Lighthouse it's only open on weekends. Last turn off before the Golden Gate Bridge. OMG what a road.

I usually spent most of my time in Tahoe when in the area biking, hiking, camping, skiing etc. Being close to all of that and the scenery is just so much more appealing to me.
