Saw a helicopter avoid a drone on the downtown Strip in Vegas today.
At least I think it was a drone but I couldnt see the four rotors or attachments? It looked like a 3 foot round white plastic frisbee that was about 6 inches thick. I assume it had rotors somewhere but I couldnt see or hear them.

When I first saw it, it was at about 200 ft and stationary. I thought it might be an odd shaped balloon but it was under active control. As I watched it, it started to very slowly climb.

When it got to about 500 ft, one of those tourist helicopters appeared on their regular route and were heading straight toward it. The pilot seemed to see it and veered off their route and flew past it. It just kept slowly climbing and eventually got so high that I couldnt see it.

I really don't get why they aren't equip aircraft that operate in urban airspaces with RF jammers, no doubt these drones are all operating within an assigned frequency band.

What would that do? Crash the drone onto pedestrians or traffic?

As far as I know drones are set up so if they lose radio contact they just do a gentle descent in place.

That might be it. Can they climb all the way out of sight? Maybe 800 feet? I dont see any specs on the size. Are they big for a drone? This thing was not frisbee sized, it was like a round trash can lid.

If it is it, someone was flying it illegally. Now that I check out the laws, it is illegal to fly them in the city.

I am the original OP for this thread and have spent a year trying to find a drone similar to what I saw and cannot find one.

The Phantom drones mentioned can fly that high and higher but they have regular rotors that I would have clearly seen and heard. They are also too small.

What I saw was bigger than a Phanton and "floated" like a balloon but flew under intelligent control. It was also completely silent and had no landing gear visible like a drone does.

The "main body/ring" was white with black instruments located underneath.

Unless this was a completely unknown or unpublicized type of drone, it was a UFO.

Hardly, a helicopter full of tourists avoiding a flying object over downtown Vegas is not a small issue.

Second, what the hell was that thing????? I have looked at every picture of drone that I can find online and cannot find anything like it. This was too big for the drones that I see online and much to solid looking. Floating and flying silently in broad daylight.

I assumed it was a drone so didnt even bother taking a picture of it when it was hovering so low. I said 200 ft back then but I would say that it was closer to 100 ft after reexaming the light pole it was sitting over. It was very close to me and silent.

I now think it was a UFO or a highly classified military drone.

drone can fly 120m ifthe chopper was below that limit he is an idiot, drones can not fly 5km or 6km around airports, and close by they will not even take off, you have seen something that is not a drone.

Agreed, I have done a lot of research since then and it wasent a drone. It was probably closer to 4 feet wide than the 3 feet I first listed because as I said later, that pole is not as high as I first thought. I have not found any drones that big with no external propellers and even the ones with internal propellers are fairly loud. This thing was completely silent and extremely stable. So stable that it seemed impossible. It also had a shape that I have not found in any other drone.
