Anonymous Coward User ID: 72341210 United States 08/13/2019 11:58 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Generally a cough is due to mucus thickening which narrows the bronchioles (the main tubes that make up the passage to the lungs). A cough is a reflex action to clear this thickening so more respiration can occur. The thickening of mucus is generally due to irritataion but can be discolored by various stages of dead white blood cells. Ordinarily you have "dust cells" in it and the mucus is fairly clear. If it turns yellow and green, that indicates infection. The old school way was to smell the mucus as there is a distinct odor when infection is present. The inhaler dialates (opens the bronchioles) through relaxation thus giving the patient more relief. Here is one natural way to expel old mucus plugs. This "percussive therapy" accelerates this expulsion by coughing and over the waves of cilia to sweep debris up and out the throat. The cupped tapping systematically disloges trapped mucus from the lobes. This used to be very routine for parents of cystic fibrosis patients before percussion vests. |

Eventually the color will become clear, but constant irritation can create a "dry non-productive cough". Expectorants loosen mucus plugs. Other cough syrup sooth the irritation. People who are very sick will often swallow their phlegm. What happens often is they started with a viral infection and started swallowing their phlegm (often done by kids and the elderly or disoriented very sick adults). Then food particles are in this phlegm and a bacterial infection happens on top of the viral infection. Their fever spikes, their mucus turns yellow and is thickened.
