Many newer boats of this size are "positive flotation" boats, will float even if filled with water and even if upside down, ... but not all are and it is unlikely that their's was (the one which the boys who were lost were in and that they later found was a "positive flotation" boat - if the boys could somehow stayed with the boat their odds of survival would have been very very good).

Out in the open sea in a SMALL NON "positive flotation" boat once it starts taking on water you can be in deep doo doo very quickly, just seconds in fact.

As I stated above everybody should learn from their mistakes if you are going to go out on BIG water. For just a little bit of money ($300 or so for a marine radio/antenna and waterproof Personal Locator Beacon), and some planning you can increase your survival odds if something goes wrong probably 1000% (and also in that size boat, that far out, have your life jacket on even if it is unzipped if you don't have the suspenders type of self inflating device)

Sad story ... but based upon their actions eventually they WERE going to be caught in deep doo doo if they kept going to sea that way, and their odds of survival would have been bad when that happened in the future (and it WOULD - you can't push your luck forever when taking those kind of BIG risks) .

Tough day today.

The fact that the extremely extensive search efforts have not turned up a boat, capsized or otherwise; has us presuming Brian and Justin ended up in the water. We arrived here after information from the CG last night that this boat is not foam filled and will sink. Of course we don’t know for sure, or how. The likelihood of surviving 6 days in the water start to get pretty low even for these two guys.

Today we we did the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do- tell my niece and nephew and my son and daughter that daddy/uncle Brian wasn’t coming home. I know anything is possible and they could still be found but we didn’t want to leave them with this ambiguity.

As hard as this chapter has been, the next gets even harder. The world my family knew Friday morning doesn’t exist anymore. We will try to pick up the pieces and do the best we can.

Ugg me too. It seems the boat was old.

They sailed away on Friday. It is the next Thursday and they still have basically no validating sign of them that makes me believe their are still alive.

I admire your never ending hope that things turn out well, but being the fact that they went on an adventure to the sea many miles away from shore.

The sea is beyond imagination a wild place. To think they have a chance. Maybe the are marooned on an island somewhere, that would be their best chance. But if the sea is floating them around without food and water..I don't see how. It has been too long.

Maybe, maybe they are marooned on island...but we are not talking a Gilligan Island fantasy.

it's been very sad to read about this in Jacksonville. It rained ALL day long last saturday in jax, it never stopped. Prayers to all of these people, one of them went to Palm Beach Atlantic it looks like...(i went there a long time ago.) Very very sad story.

The boat didn't look old. The top looked in good condition and unweathered.
It looked nice in the image caught on camera.

But, the reason I really wanted to update is I was looking at the ol' McCluney woman's fb and she sure knows a lot of people in show biz. Small time theatre I suppose but one was from the Tonight Show. I didn't look at all her connections just trying to get a feel for who she is because of her "acting" or actions during this.

Then I clicked on her husband's again and HE IS GONE. Yes, it says his fb page has been merged with a generic fireman page. Why? Why did she ditch it so soon?
It's not even that it is closed like some are but that his hasn't been posted on since 2015 fb page was merged with something else.

The other wife was on tv today, not her. She is not giving up and was posed with a Bible and is going on some rickety looking airplane with a plane ministry outfit or something.

The family admitted it had mechanical problems in the past and they had to be towed a few times

Exactly. Nobody in their right mind would. I am just saying that there is a chance they will come back after the media turns away and the general public. Then it will be an even bigger story like movie of the week caliber stuff. There's just a thread of hinkiness running through this story that makes me think that it's not all that it appears to be. The brother acted like it was some small issue with it but who would go far out and need the CG to tow you back. Once might be for free but I wouldn't make a habit out of it. So, why wouldn't you fix it if you were hell bent on going out on it? Right? You've been towed you take it to a Marine repair shop.

One person on the boating link asked why is there a discrepancy over whether the boat was sinkable or not.
That the website said those boats will float even if swamped because of positive foam flotation built into the hull and all you have to do is stay on the boat. Maybe the next safety measure that needs to be built in is handles on the bottom of the boats to hang onto.

I still am half expecting for there to be more to this story.

How far out was that reef they planned to visit? I'm not good at nautical maps, so I found nothing. I think it was Reef A8.

Oh wait...I think I just found it. 30 miles offshore:

No. Not a lezbo angle. In fact, you'd be hard pressed to find pictures of the two wives together as friends either before this happened and even after when you'd THINK they'd be clinging to each other for mutual support and encouragement. I did not find that any evidence existed not just of the two women but that the men were ever friends either. They knew each other because the McCluney wife talked about her long standing pre-existing relationship with the Walker husband.

I think the Walkers were the ones moving? Is that right? He had the zillow search for houses in Colorado on his fb page.

But, then I heard the other couple were selling the boat and other stuff, too? Can someone set me straight on who was in the process of relocating? If not the Walkers?

I am like a dog with a bone when I come across a hinked out story, especially one my fake news stations locally act really weird about their programming how much coverage to give it. If they were reporting it before it was sort of meh over the weekend. Then Monday it was slow to ramp up, but TUESDAY it was a hair on fire emergency wall to wall every minute of the news cast including all weather reports were tailored to this story. Then the next day it was back to sort of slack reporting then yesterday it was "meh". Today it is OFF the radar.

I don't know what it is now but years ago your life insurance didn't make a payout until you were missing 7 years. So, I don't think that's the angle unless it was another motivation stronger than insurance proceeds to make you dip out on your old life.

Did I ever tell you about the tale of the a Charter Captain /policeman I know who ripped the entire bottom out of his 40' Chris Craft because he was waving back at people who waving at him (and WHY were they FRANTICALLY waving at him? ... because he was taking his boat directly into an area of underwater rocks that were both clearly on the map AND were in an area he had boated for YEARS)? Just one tale ... I have at least a hundred.

Yep ... when it comes to boating even Smart people seem to leave their common sense behind much of the time.

GUARANTEED if those two firefighters did that reef fishing trip that same way 50 times they would most likely be dead if there wasn't another boat almost right next to them when the odds finally caught up with them. Probably only take 25 trips in fact.

I was fishing out on Lake Michigan once and a storm rolled in, waves were about 6-8 feet, one of the guys went to the bow to go potty and flipped right in, no jacket on, drunk

Emotions are high and charged some are believers and some are not . and its totally okay with me .
What i have is just a gift i do not flaunt it . i use what ever it is to help others . my main goal is like every one eleses bringing people home or closure .
