I have a close relative, by marriage, from El Salvador.

In the last couple of years, La Sombra Negra (The Black Shadow) has been picking up known criminals such as MS13. They are not seen again.

La Sombra Negra is not a right wing nor commie group, just a group of citizens sick of the crime. I have never seen anything in the media about them.

The new prez of El Salvador, an Independent, has launched a major crack down on crime, especially street crime.

The people are thrilled. They have no sympathy for the gangs and petty criminals who preyed on the weak for years.

I recently visited San Salvador for a wedding. The downtown area was totally safe with people walking their dogs past midnight.

Driving in a cab through a poor neighborhood on the way to the wedding I saw a squad of police/soldiers with M16s walking down a residential street on Saturday night.

If the crime rate goes down, tourism and expat retirees will help the local economy. Most of the people I met do not want to go the US; they love their home country. If they had more opportunities at home, they would stay there.

BTW, the crooked ex-prez there sold off the gold mines to the Chicoms before leaving office. The people are quite angry about this.
