Anyone who was not of the Jewish faith was considered a "stranger."
Read Joshua ch. 9 where he made an agreement with people from a neighboring nation so that they could dwell in Israel. The men he agreed with had lied to him. Still he made the agreement and Israel is still affected by it today.
Israel always had borders and walls. Especially in Jerusalem.
During the time of Jesus, Rome was occupying Israel. The people had no choice in the matter. It was a result of a falling away, as this had happened several times before.
I saw a documentary years ago on Israel's army, and they are a force to be reckoned with. I don't think there is a single Islamic nation that could win against Israel's army. I'm personally glad that Israel is an American ally.
