What your father did was abusive. I don't believe spankings are wrong per se, but let the punishment fit the crime. Also, there are other methods of discipline, which children do need so they don't grow up thinking they can do things without consequence. My husband used to get beat so bad for minor mischief as well. He instituted laps for our kids when they need it. We have different laps set up on our property, small, medium, long, and up the hill laps. It gives them exercise and time to think about what they did.
