Let the younger ones move on up... but somebody please tell that to Biden, Sanders, Trump, and all the other old fogeys who are on power trips in their old age. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 73324455 I retired - only because my time is worth more to me than yet more money. I'm now doing everything I didn't have time for before, and I'm still too busy. At least my life is on my schedule. |
darth User ID: 28178764 United States 08/25/2019 04:55 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I came out of retirement and went back to work for the same company that I retired from. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 60052792 Why, you ask? Because the company offered everything short of daily blowjobs for me to come back. The "new kids" that were hired to take our place are lazy, spoiled, not punctual, won't take care of the equipment, and file workers comp cases almost daily. That's why. Was offered previous pay +10%, paid medical, paid vacation, and a $15,000 sign on bonus......and I took it. My story turned out different.... I made my son prez of the company one year ago because I knew I would be out with scheduled surgery for two months. Afterwards, I began working out of my home office, semi-retired. That young man (32) is doing a fabulous job and turning a better profit than I EVER did. Our workers, mostly in their 30s and 40s are excellent. The only problem is education and training. I have a degree in engineering and over 40 years of experience. Plus, I studied the specific chemistry that is used in our industry for the past 15 years. My son will not be ready to fly on his own until he gets a four year degree in chemistry or equivalent. BTW, over the past 17 years of running a manufacturing company, I have hired many young people. Only one has been a keeper and she is now the VP of our company at 22 y/o. Most of the entry level workers lack education, i.e., they cannot do what I could do in the 4th grade despite having high school diplomas. They lack ambition and seem content to play on their phones all day. |

Then you both need to hire a good chemist and he'll know enough to supervise the new guy. Your son is too busy managing for profit to spend time learning the details that are taught in a four year school(and their requisite pre-courses). I've found that except for specific courses, a four year degree is too time intensive to be worth the effort - especially if you can learn by doing. Just go back and fill in the gaps while not concerning yourself with the actual degree. |

Quoting: Callin The want to be hired, for a job they're not qualified for, at a rate of pay they don't deserve, and whine about not being promoted to CEO after 3 months. I worked in an office of those people, they're real. They also seem to think they're the only ones who ever went to college. |

After I retired they hired a young gal, who then did not show up for her first day at work. Then they hired another young gal who lasted almost two weeks, gave no notice or anything, just quit. She couldn't learn how to use the computer software that I was using. My manager got fed up and outsourced my job, and my old position with the firm was canceled. Not bragging, but we older folks had a different work ethic. We had to prove ourselves and didn't expect any handouts, and if we got fired it was our own fault and we then smartened up and went on to greater things. I think we've proven to be loyal, competent employees. |

Larry D. Croc User ID: 70736097 United States 08/25/2019 07:48 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I was asked to postpone my retirement for almost two years after I'd said I was going to hang it up. Same story, they couldn't find someone willing to work he hours or commit to the quality of work that needed doing. I finally said "sorry, gotta go". Figured if they couldn't fill the bill in that time it really wasn't up to me to stay on until I croaked or got too old to enjoy my retirement time. And it was a job that paid well. I miss the people I worked with, I don't miss the daily grind even though I really liked what I did for the past twenty years. That part of the business has contracted notably both in terms of volume of business and profitability. Doing it right and doing it well may take some extra focus, some extra work, but it leaves 'em wanting more. Anonymous Coward User ID: 30776013 Canada 08/25/2019 10:19 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Fuck off snowflake. Boomers can't retire because they took on debt to help your parents buy the house where the basement you dwell in is. Gen Xers are paying for your education in gender or social media studies, feeding you, paying for your health insurance, they probably bought the phone you are posting from and pay for your internet connection. They pay for the toilet paper you wipe your ass with. How can they do that if they quit their jobs. Where are you going to live when they lose the house or downsize to a place that has no room for you? I'm a bit salty because two weeks ago I finished training up a group of new hires, one of the sorriest bunch of trainees I've ever seen. Today, two of them were scheduled to work but they just didn't show up, didn't bother to even call and say goodbye and thanks for the fish. Us oldtimers kept the ship running and we got it all done properly, but we had to knuckle down to get it done. Times are about to get tough like few people alive today have ever seen. You kids better toughen up and learn to do the basic things that you take for granted because you always had someone to do it for you. You better learn how to do things and know things, because if the internet ever went down you won't know shit because you don't commit knowledge to memory. You figure there's no point worrying your pretty little head because if you ever need to know something, you can google it. I say this in the spirit of a concerned grandparent. |

I still think he needs the degree/education in order to be able to handle the many new processes that he will see in his career. Yes, he could learn a lot on his own, but I have observed that he learned a lot more in a classroom environment with exams. He was competitive enough to study to pass exams. We HAVE a good chemist, but he is retiring too. He was part time like a consultant. Most chemists cost far too much for us to employ one full time. I have accumulated the BEST tech library of rare books on chemical processes for our industry. I told them all that on my deathbed I am going to say, "READ THE FUCKING BOOKS!"
