Technically all rifles can be classified as "assault rifles" depends on who gets to pick and chose, composite accessories are the current thinking (Armalite) AR means Armalite Rifle, where as M means military but the 15 and the 16 are basically the same. the M4 uses different ammo
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 41173011

You dumbass. M4 does not use different ammo.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 60558212

AR10 uses the 7.62x51. There is a slight difference between 5.56x45 and the .223 but that's a velocity difference and not a physical one. M4,m16,ar15 are all the same caliber.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74952575

Yes, but you can use a heavier load in the M4 because of shorter barrel length. I did not say different ammo size/caliber.

People are uneducated. Just ignore them...giggle a little and let them live in their ignorance. The truth always comes out. All of their lies and hate will eat them alive.

Sit back and watch the show. When they're finally face down in the dirt being raped by a Somalian gotefuck3r...then you'll save them.

I know...disarmed serfs in Denmark and other ghey places where phags are produced are very mad that American men can still protect their families.

You can use a heaver load due to shorter barrel...am I wrong on that?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 41173011

YES, you are wrong, you make it sound like it's a design decision to go shorter barrel for a heavier bullet.

A shorter barrel is a tradeoff between compactness of the weapon for close quarters combat vs long range accuracy.

The same round shot thru both barrels will exit the shorter one a bit slower that's the key difference.

What do you mean by heavier load?
Heavier could mean heavier bullet so instead of 55 grain, 75 grain but you can do that in ANY AR, barrel length has nothing to do with it. Heavier could mean bigger caliber, once you do that, you are no longer talking MilSpec so the discussion is pointless.

I know two are military weapons. But what is the real difference? Anyone please? I'm sick of people telling me AR are assault weapons.

It's been fairly well explained, but You can't own a full auto m16 or m4 WITHout applying and paying the tax. AR15's are Not full auto. There is no Auto setting on the fire selector sw. It's either on or off. 1 bullet, one trigger pull, or no bullet. semi-auto only.
You can't just dance in and buy a full auto rifle or buy one over the internet.
Funny how 'social security' has a shortfall...but never WELFARE!
Gimme a break.
Somehow, we can always afford ALL types of welfare (even for millions of illegal immigrants!), plus billions in foreign aid to nations that hate us...BUT...social security is a "problem".

Nah, the problem is the goobermint...Unknown AC.

Yes, we get it, you are super smart SAAMI and all but the question from the OP is what's the difference between AR and M16 and it's simple:
1. M16's and M4's can be fired automatic while AR's can't
2. M16s and M4's are chambered only for NATO 5.56 rounds, AR's are chambered in all kinds of rounds, including the variants you listed
3. M16's and M4's are standardized for mass use by soldiers, ARs are very customizable
4. Some AR's use parts not suitable for their MilSpec cousins the M16.
5. Build quality for M16's and M4's are consistent and to MilSpec standards while AR's are all over the place.

M16, M4 and AR15 are NOT the same caliber:
THe NATO standard is 5.56, the civilian models are ALL OVER THE PLACE. 223 CAN be fired in milspec weapon but SOME non MilSpec AR's CAN"T handle the pressure from the NATO round and must use .223, my Remington predator rifle was exactly that way.

The best part of this thread went right over everyone's head. OP is a liberal looking into buying his first Rifle. And he is looking at exactly what the DNC/Globalists do not want him to even consider owning.

To the OP. As long as you know you will never hurt anyone, go buy that rifle and never vote against OUR Second Amendment.

What is a good quality brand that wont breakdown, something that will last.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 18990010

Is FN 15 a good brand?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 18990010

In this day and age, with the advent of CNC machines EVERYFUCKINGWHERE the "spec" tolerances on just about all of them will be just fine.

One "name" is really not any better than the others.. trust me, I've been dealing with these things for 40 years, Hell I was making M-16s out of AR-15s before FOPA.

Want an expert opinion?.. here it is. Buy the one you like, just open it up, look inside the receivers for ugly machining marks first.. if they are there, hand it back.

Next, buy a nickel boron bolt and carrier and fire control group.

Those are the best upgrades you are going to do to have a reliable gun in any configuration.

there ya have it.

ARs tend to multiply like rabbits! Build one down the road maybe buy a complete upper and build the lower from a kit! My other 2 cents is buy quality mags and not cheap ones because they are cheap. I mainly use MagPul mags and never any issues! Enjoy and be safe!

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward

What is a "heavier load"???

If talking bullet weight, 16"/20" or even longer bbl don't matter. What matters is Twist Rate. 1:7 or 1:8 is needed for 77gr 5.56x45 ammunition.

77gr ammunition is the most viable bullet for distance precision and game killing.

M4 can be a 13" barrel with a welded/pinned flashhider or brake; as long as oal of barrel is 16"; usually 16.1" to be sure ATF can't jack with you.

A 13" barrel don't make velocity like a 16" barrel can, and is much less in velocity than a 20" bbl.

An M4 is typically a flat top configuration and has short or medium length gas system. The 18-24" AR-15 will have full-length gas system because it is smoother on ejection and less violent in terms of recoil.

The only "military" aspect of the AR system is the Selector Switch with 3rd position for Full-Auto or Burst.

Military pieces will also typically have Chrome-lined chamber and barrel for longest barrel life. In some states there may be holdovers from the 90s legislation outlawing pistol grip, flashider, bayonet lug etc.

Back to subject of configuration, there are also AR-pistols usually with a short-barreled upper, like 9-12"; just long enough for shortest gas system and a couple inches of barrel beyond the gas vent hole.

The M-4 with 77gr ammunition is a decent performer out to 350yds. a 20" barrel with 77gr ammunition can easily deliver 1moa accuracy out to 600yds or further. With a 1:6.5 Twist 20" barrel (have to single-load your ammo), a 90gr match bullet is viable with precision to 1000yds.

Remember - there was no such as 'assault weapon' in the world - until Josh Sugarmann invented the term.

"Assault weapon" had no definition until the early '80s.
