Teenager 'blind' from living off crisps and chips
Experts are warning about the risks of extreme fussy eating after a teenager developed permanent sight loss after living on a diet of chips and crisps.

Eye doctors in Bristol cared for the 17-year-old after his vision had deteriorated to the point of blindness.

Since leaving primary school, the teen had been eating only French fries, Pringles and white bread, as well as an occasional slice of ham or a sausage.

Tests revealed he had severe vitamin deficiencies and malnutrition damage.

The adolescent, who cannot be named, had seen his GP at the age of 14 because he had been feeling tired and unwell. At that time he was diagnosed with vitamin B12 deficiency and put on supplements, but he did not stick with the treatment or improve his poor diet.

Three years later, he was taken to the Bristol Eye Hospital because of progressive sight loss, Annals of Internal Medicine journal reports.

Dr Denize Atan, who treated him at the hospital, said: "His diet was essentially a portion of chips from the local fish and chip shop every day. He also used to snack on crisps - Pringles - and sometimes slices of white bread and occasional slices of ham, and not really any fruit and vegetables.

"He explained this as an aversion to certain textures of food that he really could not tolerate, and so chips and crisps were really the only types of food that he wanted and felt that he could eat."

Dr Atan and her colleagues rechecked the young man's vitamin levels and found he was low in B12 as well as some other important vitamins and minerals - copper, selenium and vitamin D.

Why was he even allowed to get to that stage? The parents should have been held accountable and the school need to also take responsibility for not ensuring he ate properly.

Much easier for them both to just turn a blind eye for an easy life than give him proper nutrition.

Yep. Those parents who do raise their kids get savotaged by the parents with free-range kids.

For instance, one of these parents asked me if my kid can stay late playing with her kid. I told her that we obey strict bed time to avoid being tired in school. She couldn't believe it and called it old-fashioned in front of my kid. She went further and started debating me on whether parents even have the right to tell their kids when they should go to bed. Again, in front of the kids. She seemed to believe that exercising that kind of authority is somehow traumatizing.

It wasn't the junk food that did it. It was the lack of crucial vitamins and minerals that he wasn't getting from this food.

Take your damn multi-vitamin daily.

And now it HAS to be someone else's fault, no way this goofy kid could be responsible for his own ignoring medical advice. Or his parents.

I'm sorry it happened but he WAS told to take vitamins and refused to do so. Reaping what he sowed.

It sounds like the kid developed type 2 diabetes and went blind from it. A diet of pure carbs/sugar will do that.

I wouldn't be surprised if his parents weren't even home that often or didn't have home cooked meals available. Some parents think they can do what they want when the kids are teenagers, like they aren't needed anymore.

Kids, even older kids, who don't have a somewhat regular schedule are miserable. The parents and his doctor should have been helping him before things got extreme and they should have followed up with a plan if his health wasn't improving.

Funny you say because most of the time it’s why doesn’t government stay out of families business then when a child is malnourished it’s why didn’t they do anything.

Agreed as far as the health aspect, but if you didn’t parent your kid well enough that at 14 and on they can’t make their own food then you failed them. I was hunting at 12 and could skin a deer by the same time.

So is health class nowadays not about nutrition and health? It’s probably spent learning about transgender issues and common sodomy core.

I was about to post the same thing. Yup, gone are the days of teaching kids health, nutrition, biology and how to cook. Instead they're too busy confusing children about their gender and indoctrinating them into the LGBTQP cult.

Growing up in the 70s, we had PSAs on nutrition:

It's a vegan thing. No meat, no vitamin B12. Nerve damage from lack of meat in your diet is permanent. This kid will be blind for the rest of his life.
