What's your position on the Salem Witch Trials?
Can they be justified? Anyone who studied that period and knows a good argument in their favor?

Re: What's your position on the Salem Witch Trials?
I think Reverend George Burroughs was the only sane voice in the court room.

The original accusers who claimed to have seen spectral phenomena years later confessed before the Puritan fellowship in the Salem area that they had made up the story because they were frightened by the sickness experienced.

Unfortunately, it took the unjust death of a preacher and a man of God, along with many Christian men and women in the area, to finally put an end to the utterly bufoonish folk superstition of spectral witchery being admitted in court.

The only witch and devil in Salem was the judge and perhaps the African house maid.

To read the official court proceedings will make your eyes roll.

You apparently don't know jack squat about the Salem witch trials.

Most have heard of the Salem witch trials, very few have ever sat down and read the Salem witch trials.

Basically, all people know today is that some Puritans hanged a bunch of witches.

What actually happened is that some lying maniacal teenage girls combined with one opportunistic judge hanged a bunch of Puritans including the preacher.

WTF, there were more women executed than men in Salem.

Traditionally "witches' have been women in White country.

When you have good spectral evidence, like...

"I saw Mary Jane Doe enter her house at midnight, and later a black cat came out of the window, and ran into the forest"....

then you got a lot of females to string up or burn.

Back in those days, anyone doing the black arts was a witch, and a man could be a witch just as a woman. In fact, the witch king was the most feared witch of all, and it always had to be a man.

That's what Reverend George Burroughs was accused of. It was him they accused of signing up witches around Salem to make pacts with the devil.

George Burroughs said they were all stark raving mad and ignorant of the Scriptures, for there is nothing in Scripture of women turning into black dogs. And right he was.

Well, of course, that didn't satiate the judge's blood lust, so Burroughs and many others were hanged, upon which the court could seize their properties.

Re: What's your position on the Salem Witch Trials?
They had found Reverend Burroughs guilty (by utter hearsay and spectral lunacy) of being the witch king of Salem. They searched his body for the devil's mark, but could not find one. And as he stood on the gallows that summer of August 19, 1692, he gave a perfect recitation of the Lord's prayer from the Puritan Geneva Bible, which was said to be an impossible fete for a witch to perform. And then they hanged him, instead of admitting that the whole mob of them were as mad as Burroughs said they were.

George Burroughs was hanged at Proctor's Ledge in present-day Salem on August 19, 1692. He was the only minister to have experienced this fate in American history. Although the jury had found no witches' marks on his body, he was nonetheless convicted of witchcraft and a conspiracy with the devil.

While standing on a ladder before the crowd, waiting to be hanged, he successfully recited the Lord's Prayer, something that was generally considered by the Court of Oyer and Terminer to be impossible for a witch to do.

"Witch" actually used to be more commonly understood to denote a male in league with the devil.

Hardly anyone knows the real story of Salem today.

Sorry, you dont know anything!

3/4 of people executed for witchcraft were females.

For three centuries of early modern European history, diverse societies were consumed by a panic over alleged witches in their midst. Witch-hunts, especially in Central Europe, resulted in the trial, torture, and execution of tens of thousands of victims, about three-quarters of whom were women. Arguably, neither before nor since have adult European women been selectively targeted for such largescale atrocities.

The greatest risk was owning a cat, especially black cats.

If you also looked rather unusual, as compared to the general population, like being light golden/platinum blonde or red haired, then you were also more likely to be executed.

The key to surviving a witch trial in White country:

1. Dont be a woman

2. Dont own cats.

3. Dont look too unusual.

They said he had learned the devil's craft while doing missionary work among the native Americans.

Actually, Burroughs was a good man who had the terribly unfortunate task of being surrounded by morons.

You seem to have a problem of comprehending English.

He was accused of being "a king in Satan's Kingdon" (one of many)...

NOT the "Witch King of Salem"....huge difference

(or is Massachusetts where Satan is head-quartered?)

AND again, most were females executed in Salem, which agrees with the witch trials data in White country.

See link in post above.
