I just searched Sudbury on GLP and saw no topic on this.

The mine started in 1890.
The smoke and nickel particulate fallout has created a gray dead zone for miles around it.

I looked for pictures of the terrain and can find nothing that looks like the moon.

Google earth, but use it through maps/satellite view, and on the top left, scroll the date back.

Sudbury was a stand-in for the moon and other little-known (Canadian) things about the Apollo program

While Canadian astronauts may not have visited the moon yet, our achievements are part of Apollo history

Re: The moon landings were filmed in Sudbury, Ontario. A nickel mine there has killed everything downwind making a perfect moonscape
Forty years ago, nickel mines and smelters around Sudbury, a relatively small city in northern Ontario, had created one of the most dramatic examples of environmental devastation in the history of our planet.

The nearby landscape appeared dead and blackened.

Today, Sudbury boasts some of the cleanest air of any city in Ontario. Formerly acidified lakes — and there are 330 substantial lakes within the city limits alone — have come back to life. The surrounding countryside is now green and forested

Yeah, the train never ran through the dead zone.

Appears to be publicly admitted to being a 'stand in' or testing ground for NASAs rovers. Dont think any of this is meant to imply the moon landings were faked.
