Message Subject WALKAWAY: More Republicans than Democrats leaving Congress before 2020 election

More Republicans than Democrats are exiting Congress in the lead up to the 2020 elections. 13 GOP representatives and 4 senators are retiring without bids for higher office, compared to 1 Senate and 3 House Democrats.

Why it matters: Congressional retirements can describe the political landscape before an election and may signal that some GOP candidates lack confidence that their party can retake control of the House, per The Atlantic.

Retiring House Republicans:

Will Hurd, Texas-23 (Partisan Voter Index, via Cook Political Report: R+15)
James Sensenbrenner, Wisc.-5 (R+13)
Susan Brooks, Ind.-5 (R+9)
Martha Roby, Ala.-2 (R+16)
Sean Duffy, Wis.-7 (R+8)
John Shimkus, Ill.-15 (R+21)
Bill Flores, Texas-17 (R+12)
Rob Woodall, Ga.-7 (R+9)
Paul Mitchell, Mich.-10 (R+13)
Pete Olson, Texas-22 (R+10)
Kenny Marchant, Texas-24 (R+9)
Mike Conaway, Texas-11 (R+32)
Rob Bishop, Utah-1 (R+26)

Retiring House Democrats:

José Serrano, N.Y.-15 (D+44)
Dave Loebsack, Iowa-2 (D+1)
Susan Davis, Calif.-53 (D+14)
