i have noticed this on visits to the usa and canada ... while there are a few extra-large here in britain the phenomenon really does not appear to have taken hold here, and over in europe proper i have not seen any evidence of this at all

The people in the stores and outside were staggeringly overweight - I'd say 70% - 80% of them. Here, I'd say, maybe, 5% have that problem. I know, from people who have visited the USA as tourists, that servings in eateries and restaurants are at least double in size, and sometimes much! much bigger, than servings here. Perhaps, that's got something to do with it?
