I'm really surprised there aren't zoetrope images of the painting. He loved to combine engineering and art.
More than likely there'd be 3 layers.
Quoting: pool I just picked up a book few wks ago about this very topic! How DaVinci did utilize science/engineering into his art projects. Haven't cracked it open yet but I bet you're right about multiple layers, Pool. There is always a primer.
