My family was one of the first to start breeding Pits, here in Mississippi. We bred and trained them to be cattle dogs. They were indeed tenacious, powerful, and smart.

They were also extremely loving and faithful. They never showed any threatening behavior to the people they knew, but would guard their territory, just as any other dog will do.

We would let them ride in the beds of our trucks, and they traveled with us, wherever we went. We could go into a store, and they would remain, calmly, never attempting to get out, until we returned. They were particularly apathetic to the comings and goings of other people, unless someone approached our trucks.

We are talking hundreds of dogs, owned by my family and our acquaintances, over the years. None ever attacked a person.

The pit I had when my daughter was born, Belle, was like a mother, and a sister to her. Belle not only watched over my daughter, as she grew up, but would also endure the hugging, dragging, riding, sometimes rough play, with unending patience.

Belle was, however, the only Pit that I ever felt threatened by. One day, my daughter, then 3 or 4 years old, was attempting to open the fence gate. She knew that she wasn't allowed to do that, and so I went out and spanked her, gently, on her bottom. As she began crying, I was suddenly separated from my daughter, by a growling dog. Belle made it clear that NOBODY was going to harm her child, even me! That was actually reassuring, to me.

Any breed of dog can be dangerous, especially when trained to be. Show me a dog that will attack its owner, and I will show you a relationship, with no love involved. The dogs know.

Many people want to own pit bulls just because the dogs have a reputation of being tough, aggressive, and prone to violence. These people usually care little for their dogs, and treat them accordingly. They create what they think the breed to be. You know the kind of people I am talking about; the kind that drive jacked up trucks, with balls hanging off the hitch, because they have none of their own.
