This is what happens when you kill all the wolves or drive them out. They are specialized hunters and they can detect disease ridden animals. They have been doing this since the beginning of time, but people killed them and the humans fear of wolves has caused an unreasonable distrust against wolves.

Wolves would smell the disease out and eliminate it from the herd..but that’s hard to do when there are no wolves. Allow wolves back in and you’ll see dramatic changes in the health of the deer populations.
