Electric-Car Owners Shocked by California Blackouts
Everybody knows that electric cars are going to save the planet from climate change or something. Unlike regular cars, which run on gasoline and make all the polar bears cry as they sink into the sea, electric cars are powered by... um... magic? Mjölnir, the hammer of Thor? That must be how it works, or else owning an electric car would impose some sort of cost to the environment. And that can't be, or those guys wouldn't be so insufferably smug.

You know those intentional blackouts they're having in California to reduce the risk of wildfires? Well, guess what happens now?

Weeks can be a long wait if you’re looking at a Model 3 in your garage with a drained battery, no electrical power to charge it, and the closest grocery store with power 80 miles away. But such is life in the Golden State

I guess they should have bought solar panels or a generator. Especially, since CA is known to have outages frequently.

My brother in-law has solar panels on his house in Stockton which are connected to the grid but if the power fails there is no power to the house from the panels.

Too bad, so sad.

LOL.

And this was why I said years ago I would never buy an electric only car. Hybrid yes, Tesla No.

Turn of power to prevent fires... forget what we used to light homes before electricity....hint:fire. Over 18,000 homes burn annually from candles. 1,500 homes burned in the California wildfires. But ya let them turn off your power! When your shits on fire hopefully your phone is charged to be able to call the fire department. Califucking Stupid!

Only a fucking idiot would tie their solar power to the grid. If it's tied to the grid they will shut you off too when they shut down.

I always wanted to get an electric car with a trailer and a big ass diesel generator to power it while spewing tons of black smoke

energy losses close to 80% during conversion but
how cool would that be...

and that's like 99.8 percent of all solar systems out there

the other day in costco I asked the solar booth rep:
so you sell batteries with your systems now?, what's the capacity?

they said yes, about $15K and they're good for about 3 hours

No what's the capacity of the battery- usually in ampere hours?

they guy: ahhhhh ahhhhh I don't know but usually 3 to 5 hours..

You have not seen the most recent studies? These electric cars have proven worse for environment than gas cars. the batteries and components are worse and the amount of electricity it takes to power them is worse for CO2. Go Amish!

You misunderstood.

The purpose of the blackout is not to prevent fires.

The purpose is to absolve the electic company for fiscal responsibility for fires.

If you are negligent, light a candle and it gets out of hand and burns down a town... YOU are on the hook for it, not PG&E.

The electric company got sued, plaintiffs alleged faulty grid started the fire, cost them millions. PG&E, seeing how that game is played, elects to turn off power rather than fix their antiquated and overloaded equipment. There's no law saying they can't.

I have a feeling there's going to be an upswell of angry customers. Laws will get changed, power will flow, consumers and taxpayers as usual will be the ones taking it in the shorts.

I hate to say it, but if someone needs a hospital to survive, the responsible thing is to live within walking distance of one. There will always be failures in infrastructure and transportation. Why end your life for a simple earthquake, storm, or bizarre new California law?
