I just heard that someplace else. It was a guy on a u2B channel, don't remember what his channel is. He was talking about the port of long beach? being the second largest port in the U.S. and there were concerns of terrorists being able to smuggle nuclear bombs in through that port.

I am a licensed "Extra" which is an Amateur Radio License (HAM).

This is all licensed at a FEDERAL level by the FCC. There are laws in place that actually protect our right to operate on the Ham bands.

For example, I can put up a tower to operate my radio equipment and short of being in the flight path of an Airport local governments can not stop me from doing it.

Other benefits, for example, permit me to operate gear in my car that would otherwise be illegal. For example, in Florida it is illegal for you to run a police scanner in your car... unless you are a licensed ham operator then it is fully legal. The police can not say anything about it if you are licensed.

So, California has no right to do anything. If they (the govt) operated their own repeater net on the ham bands and paid for it they have all the rights in the world to shut it down. But, if I have a repeater up on my own tower they can't say a thing about it.

Now... if they are using towers on PUBLIC LAND there is nothing saying you have the rights to use THEIR EQUIPMENT (such as a tower). Whoever owns the tower makes the rules. If that is the case just move the repeater.

And BTW it is common practice to have a "technical analysis" when putting an antenna on a tower. Doesn't matter if AT&T ownes the tower or T-Con owns the tower... they will usually always want this to make sure your antenna and frequencies being used will not affect the operation of other tenants on the tower. Those tests usually run in the thousands of dollars. Ham radio operators think that is expensive because HAM is a hobby.... but a commercial operator just expects it because it is normal.

I just bought a set after that thread a week or so ago. Haven't taken them out of the box yet. Got my book yesterday.

The problem is and always has been line of site. In the remote regions where the Forrest service has allowed repeaters on their towers it's always been space "given" to the Ham club that set it up. And the Forrest service controls all that land so they are the only game in town.

So unless your portable gennie has a 200 ft or more tower, it doesn't help much.

The best repeaters are the tallest repeaters.
