In my opinion, it is a brilliant move:

1) Trump recognizes the sovereignity of the Syrian nation. As ISIS was mostly defeated, he pulls back troops as the reason for them being there is gone (namely: enemy forces at the border of a NATO member country, namely Turkey, and those enemy forces committing attacks within multiple NATO member countries, ref. attack on Zaventem Belgium, ....)
So US is not the bully enforcing regime changes as Hillary Clinton/Obama administration did

2) When US troops are not there, there is no risk of one NATO member country getting in conflict with another NATO member country (US/Turkey). So that's one big hot potatoe gone.


3) Russia outplayed: they cannot support Turkey (bad publicity) and they cannot support Syria in attacking the Turks (as in that case Russia would perform an attack on a NATO member country. Nobody wants this to happen)


4) Trump gave the whole world carte blanche for introducing heavy economic santions on Turkey. Europe has been looking for a reason to do this since years. So now we have an actual good reason, as does Trump (in one go protecting US's own steel economy


5) For the Kurds: yes, at this moment it seems they have been played. But only temporary. If both US and Europe put sanctions on the Turkish economy, let's see what will be in the deal/conditions to lift the sanctions...


Trump is right when he says keeping US forces there equals an endless war. Watch what happened in Bosnia or any other theater where there was a culture clash/war between Islam and the West. On all of those places, there's still military (NATO) to keep them from fighting. So by pulling out of a country that has nothing to do with Europe, you enable this own country's military to take back their land and to make it safe. The only valid reason to stay/get back there is when being asked by the country itself.

When it comes to Europe: it is our own backyard. So we should evaluate our relation with Turkey. Turkey wanted to join Europe. They might have lost their only chance now.
For those saying Turkey will side with either Russia or Iran: think long and deep if that would be a good idea for Turkey. They will be kicked out of NATO instantly, and one of their main economic pillars will colapse: Tourism. There was already one coup attempt on Erdogan that failed. This might trigger a second one which actually succeeds...
