Keep a pair of sturdy shoes or boots beside your bed along with a flashlight or headlamp and leather work gloves in case a quake strikes at night and there is broken glass around.

Make sure there is nothing that could topple onto your bed. Secure water heater with straps as many fires are caused by water heaters getting loose from their gas lines.

As the previous poster mentioned, know how to turn off utilities to your home - gas, water and electric.

Have an emergency bag with season appropriate change of clothes, snacks, water, first aid supplies, medications, pet food, etc.
