Move somewhere affordable. Supply and demand, if nobody could afford the rents or businesses couldn't find employees because of the cost of living then things would change, but apparently that isn't the case so go somewhere you can afford and let the people that can pay the high rents pay them. Not everyone can live on the coast.

A cheap house made with Chinese materials cost maybe 10,000 dollars but by the time the crony developers and their buddy politicians get their cut, it balloons to almost a million dollars for one unit.

It is pretty apparent that private business and government are not the solution. They are a big part of the problem.

It would cost maybe a million dollars to build a cheap treatment center in the desert, but the greedy developers would charge tax payers 500,000 million to build it.

Start locking up or executing people that hire illegals.
Pass a law that anyone hiring anyone for under $20 dollars an hour should be thrown in jail.

What about the cost of putting in Sewers?
What about the cost of putting in Water Mains?
What about the cost of building the street itself?
What about the cost of putting in electrical distribution facilities?

Around here, and this isn't California but a cheap place to build, it costs a developer from $90,000 to $150,000 per lot to develop a small single family house lot and from $50,000 to $100,000 per a condo or apartment. The actual construction cost for the building is ON TOP of those land development costs.

California development costs have to be at least double that in the bigger urban areas and could actually be 3x that. (that is why REDEVELOPMENt of existing neighborhoods into MUCH higher density housing is really the only way to add a lot more living units at a reasonable cost)

i drive by all road construction sites, that are closed for FUCKING YEARS sometimes, nobody EVER out there on the earth moving machinery. they are just racking up the bills while doing NOTHING, that's why it costs so much damn money.

$150,000 per lot, give me a break. that earth moving machinery is EASY TO USE, ANY MONKEY CAn do it after a few weeks training. And they KNOW IT, that's why they don't let just anyone get into the development game, EVERYTHING is set up to keep people out of that game because it's HUGE money, huge profits.

Buddy of mine bought a piece of land and parked his camper on it with the intention of building a house on it.
Every day after work, he would work on it. 2 years later it was done. He did all the electrical and plumbing himself.

He said it only cost him $50,000 including sewer, water and electrical hookup. The house is worth $350,000.

Is he in the middle of an urban area? ... or out in the country?

Did he have to build a street (built to code) with underground sewer, water, and electric?

High density development is a LOT different from building in the country.

In the country around here people's all in development cost is around $20,000 per site (not counting land), with more than 1/2 of that being in the health dept approved septic system ... but they aren't having to build the road that runs in front of their place (they are on a county or township road) or put sewer mains 30 feet underground either.

(sewer "tap in fees" for going into an existing sewer are a LOT different from having to actually BUILD the sewer - which is what developers are REQUIRED to do virtually everywhere anymore when developing raw land for high density development)
