Defense officials tell Newsweek TRUMP APPROVES SPECIAL OPS RAID TARGETING ISIS LEADER BAGHDADI, MILITARY SAYS HE'S DEAD BY JAMES LAPORTA , TOM O'CONNOR AND NAVEED JAMALI ON 10/26/19 AT 10:45 PM EDT The United States military has conducted a special operations raid targeting one of its most high-value targets, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the leader of the Islamic State militant group (ISIS), Newsweek has learned. President Donald Trump approved the mission nearly a week before it took place. Amid reports Saturday of U.S. military helicopters over Syria's northwestern Idlib province, a senior Pentagon official familiar with the operation and Army official briefed on the matter told Newsweek that Baghdadi was the target of the top-secret operation in the last bastion of the country's Islamist-dominated opposition, a faction that has clashed with ISIS in recent years. A U.S. Army official briefed on the results of the operation told Newsweek that Baghdadi was killed in the raid. And the Defense Department told the White House they have "high confidence" that the high-value target killed was Baghdadi, but further verification is pending. Members of a team from the Joint Special Operations Command carried out Saturday's high-level operation after receiving actionable intelligence, according to sources familiar with the operation. The location raided by special operations troops had been under surveillance for some time. On Saturday night, after the operation had concluded, President Trump tweeted: "Something very big has just happened!" The White House announced later that the president will make a "major statement" Sunday at 9:00 a.m... [link to www.newsweek.com (secure)] I am a Christian. Defense officials tell Newsweek How many times has Isis leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi been declared dead or injured? [link to www.ibtimes.co.uk (secure)] Baghdadi, who rarely appears in public, often declared dead or injured since inception of Isis in 2014 ... In the most recent instance, Syrian state TV said on 11 June that Baghdadi had been killed after being caught in a heavy artillery barrage in Raqqa, which Isis captured in 2014. In October 2016, reports claimed Baghdadi was in critical condition after he and three other Isis senior leaders had been poisoned. In June 2016, Iraqi TV channel said Baghdadi had been wounded in a US air strike in northern Iraq. US and Iraqi officials later said they were not able to confirm the report. Later on that month, reports claimed Baghdadi had been killed in a coalition airstrike on Raqqa. According to some news outlets, the reports were fake. The previous year, Moscow supported claims that Baghdadi had been injured by Iraqi forces. The Iraqi army said in October 2015 it had struck an Isis convoy in Anbar, Iraq, while Baghdadi was "heading to Karabla [central Iraq] to attend a meeting with Isis commanders". However, Iraqi security officials later told Reuters new information suggested "the convoy we struck was not carrying Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi". A report by The Guardian said in April 2015 that Baghdadi had been "seriously wounded" in a US-led coalition air strike in western Iraq in March. The report said it was initially thought he was not going to survive. Reports in May 2015 said the leader remained incapacitated. |
