I just returned yesterday from 3 weeks in Jerusalem for the Feast of Sukkot.

I am not Jewish nor desire to be, but what I experience there now for a second time has no relationship with your conclusions.

I have never experienced a more diverse group of people from all over the world all identifying as the offspring of one person - Israel, Jacob, the grandson of Abraham who received a Promise from The Creator concerning his offspring through Isaac.

They are all Israeli citizens or in the process of becoming citizens and come in all colors, nationalities, personal traditions and histories, and are welcomed to come to Israel and become a citizen if they can prove ancestry to Jacob. There are many Arabic Israeli citizens also with no direct connection to the offspring of Jacob. They are welcome to be involved in all parts of Israeli society, business, politics, religion etc...

You cannot go hungry in Jerusalem unless you are an addict of some sort and will not get to your feet to walk to receive free food 3 times a day. There are Israeli soup kitchens all over the city open to the hungry and provided by the Israeli people through public and private groups.

Food is also provided by a multitude of other Religeous groups not based in Isreal but in much smaller numbers and provisions.


This is not just provided to citizens either. I met people from all over the world coming to Israel for different reasons mostly Spiritual. They have no legal way to work, but none go hungry. Some have been there for years. One woman from Taiwan has been there for 8 years.

I can repeat this story for at least 8 or 9 others I met while sleeping in my Sukkah - Tent - in Independence park during the week of Sukkot.

I would wake up at around 6AM to meet a local I met last year for breakfast at the Power Cafe on Aggrippa St in Jerusalem and I saw fresh vegetables and fruit set on the street sides in 20 to 50 pound Plastic sanitary packaging for anyone to take.

I saw bread given and provided in the same way. It was available to everyone who desired it.

I am not an apologist for Israel nor do I know if this only occurs during Sukkot when they are Instructed in Scripture to give to the poor, widowed and orphaned during Sukkot specifically, but can only tell what I experienced 2 years in a row for myself and through the experiences of others living there as outsiders for years.

Did I experience less than good there? Of course I did, but the good I witnessed overcame the closed mindedness of religious zealots and radical idealist on both ends of the political spectrum.

Just thought I would share one persons experience in contrast to a whole host of uniformed personal opinions
