Yoda was 900 yrs old when he died. Jedi and Sith can control their fall speed with proper training. So him being alive does make sense. I do not like it but because they royally screwed up the last movie if they tried to introduce a new sith Lord it would be confusing. The audience wouldn't care about him or her.
