They apparently were part of a polygamous Mormon cult. They seemed more Mexican than "American," as they lived in Mexico.
Quoting: Glaber Supposedly they were part of a successful insurgency in the 1800s and migrated to mexico because of it. They're just really decent normal people. Good conservatives. The kids of the original settlers didn't hang on to the weird cult stuff or polygamy.
