BeelzeBob User ID: 918411 United States 11/19/2019 11:07 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I coached youth football...the only thing nice about it is that there is physical separation from the parents (on most fields), plus some of them don't understand enough to fully complain...but they still do. There were 25 kids and I had to kick the only black kid we had off of the team for fighting. Good thing I didn't look like a racist asshole. They were lined up to run and words were exchanged. I was 50 yards away so I couldn't hear...only watch. From what I was told later, the one kid said "I'm rubber, you're glue and what you say bounces off me and sticks to you" This triggered the black kid and he literally grabbed the rubber-glue kid by the face mask drug him out of the line, threw him down by his face mask and proceeded to kick the crap out of him. It looked like a bar fight. These kids were 8 and 9. Last Edited by BeelzeBob on 11/19/2019 11:12 AM I'm not from Canada, not that there's anything wrong with that..... |

I have personally considered riffing lacrosse or soccer, both of which I know the rules well and I would enjoy being around the game and making a little money to exercise, but douchebags like this make it not worth the hassle. They do put up with a lot of shit, but it's generally exclusively confined to rules and calls, which is perfectly acceptable within the scope of a competition. A good official knows the rules of his sport and uses his best judgment in making his calls, and can defend them if challenged or choose to ignore the protests. Officials are not, however, required to put up with personal attacks, and you can see that even at the highest levels. Generally, security will take care of those problems, but technically, if a home pate umpire, for example, is being personally taunted by people in the stands, he can request that those people be removed from the game, and they will be. Quoting: Deplorable Revbo™ I sometimes umpire Little League baseball, and this is not uncommon at all. Every parent of a 7-year-old boy thinks his kid is going to be in the Major Leagues and that a bad call by an umpire when he's 7 is going to make or break his professional career. That said, this guy shouldn't have lost his head and left the field. The parents were right to say he was being unprofessional. Those kids still needed an umpire, and he walked away. There is a way to handle this, though. An umpire on a baseball field is like the captain of a ship. He is well within his job description to have the abusive parents removed from the stands. I've never done it, myself, but I've seen it done on several occasions, and the park will always back up its umpires. Questioning calls is fine (to a point); personal insults are not and can even draw a lifetime ban from a park if they are egregious enough. Falling for a butthurt mommy, posting an edited version of the video. Tell me again why he should NOT have lost his head. Did you see the whole confrontation? Are you believing the mommy’s edited video? Are you and idiot? Let me help you with last question, Yes you are. I'm telling you how a professional official handles the situation, and I didn't "fall for a butthurt mommy." I would have had her watch the game from the parking lot if I were that umpire. You, and one other poster, seem to think this is just some everyday situation, like he's at the mall and he's being taunted, in which case, I would agree. No good can come of confronting people like that in public where they can gang up on you and will probably call the police if you argue with them. That little fella at the bagel shop comes to mind. On the baseball field, though, the umpire is god. He is the final authority for everyone on his field and observing his field, and doesn't have to put up with nonsense like that. This guy squandered that opportunity by walking away in the one situation in his life where he didn't have to, and he let them win when he had one chance at finally getting one over on people who represent the same people who have probably tormented him his whole life. All he had to do is very calmly tell the coaches that he is not going to tolerate personal abuse on his field, of himself or any players or coaches, and if the offending parents are not removed from the stands immediately, he is calling off the game. |

Almost all of them will say it's the parents of the little kids, who have never been in the situation before, who are the worst. Personally, I much prefer umpiring 14-16-year-olds to 5-9-year-olds for that reason, but mostly because it's just better baseball without all the stupid rules to remember that come with coaches pitching. If I had a nickel for every time some coach stepped over the pitching line just to get himself another six inches closer to his player, or some kid tried to stop a play at home by calling timeout from left field, well, I'd probably have a few hundred nickels. i know you're right as much as i am. if i go back to reffing hockey, it'll be for kids under the age of 10. that seems to be the point between everyone having a decent time to straight out turning into animals. of course the parents will always think they're right but they haven't tasted blood yet, so to say, so they're easier to handle. |

Maybe there's a difference between hockey parents and baseball parents? I just know that, having played baseball from 5-18, and having umpired every age, as well, the parents I've dealt with have been the easiest to get along with at the older ages. It shouldn't be that way. When your kid is 5 years old, it should be ALL about fun and learning the game, but I've seen more obnoxious parents, mostly moms, incidentally, who know next to nothing about the game, at the younger ages than I ever did playing high school ball. You can always tell the dads are really embarrassed by their wives' ridiculous behavior, too. It's written all over their faces, which is another reason for umpires to deal with it because you can bet your ass nobody else is. You know these dads are not about to confront their wives when they think they're just defending their precious little snowflakes.
