If I get the chance I'll go check. Next train doesn't come through until 3:30 though... Quoting: Too Dark Park™ Two Ok thanks. Your a big help. We're all counting on you. Zzzzzzz. Snore. (NJ) and all is well. Cars moving in both directions. Passenger line just came through moments ago. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 7551034 Trains will keep moving even if they have software malfunction. Lots of times they ignore communication and go on manual function, like they have since the 1800's. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77180988 Partially true...Canadian National Railway is on strike. My plant is serviced by CN. Their not lifting any of our product. Yard is getting pretty congested. They'll get legislated back to work pretty soon as the railway is deemed to be an essential service to Canadas economy. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 39988092 Canada 11/21/2019 03:40 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | CSX and Norfolk Souther at least utilize a Master Control Center that controls ALL trains in their network. Both of those systems also have a Backup Control Center located in an entirely different location in case the Master Control Center goes off line or goes down. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77374864 IF both of those Centers lose the ability to run the system there are standardized shutdown procedures for all moving stock across the many thousands of miles of their system. I would assume in this day and age ALL of the major train companies are run the same way, a centralized Master Control Center with a Backup Control Center located in an entirely different location. One outside problem that has caused partial shutdowns to occur is if one company's computers stop talking to another company's computers. That could be caused by computer problems or fiber optic line problems. WHEN that happens all trackage where the two systems operate simultaneously for the lines where their trackages cross would most likely be automatically shut down. In my area we have a number of line crosses between the different RR companies and the train crossing points have to be coordinated between the two companies to avoid any problems ... I have personally seen trains held, while running, for up to 12 hours on those lines, with a van bringing out a replacement engine crew because the wait ends up being so long. Recently I did see a major problem with a CSX train and Norfolk Southern train. Some screw up in the computer sytstems allowed both to be on the same track at the same time heading towards each other (multiple major river bridges involved) ... and they ended up stopped on a bridge nose to nose about 20 feet apart!!! I imagine the engineers on both of those locomotives were shitting their pants when they saw another freight train heading straight towards them on the same track!! Of course with both of those trains then stopped, right on a bridge, in a place which was a switching hub with tracks going off in multiple directions on all sides of the multiple bridges, I imangine both systems ended up with track stoppages going up line hundreds of miles in all directions. No damage ... but a nightmare to sort out and get trains running through the system again. Two freight trains? That's a lot of weight on one bridge. |

[link to www.wilx.com (secure)] Seriously, . "Local officials were notified of a nationwide train stoppage by the Canadian National Police and Michigan State University Police, said Terri Thornberry, director of the Ingham County 911 Communications Center." - an excerpt from the article. So the Canadian National Police, a foreign police force, can easily cripple our nation's train operations on the pretense of "Jonathan Abecassis, a Canadian National spokesman, said service on the railroad’s network in the U.S. was “temporarily affected” because of a suspicious package at CN’s facility in Homewood, Illinois.". Yep... You heard it here, guys, a "suspicious package" successfully temporarily shut down all train operations in America by a foreign police force. This is technically grounds for an all out war with Canada... Let's see if Trump does anything about this grievous BS.
