5,200-year-old grains in the eastern Altai Mountains redate trans-Eurasian crop exchange
Agricultural crops dispersed across Eurasia more than five millennia ago, causing significant cultural change in human populations across the ancient world. New discoveries in the Altai Mountains illustrate that this process occurred earlier than believed

Most people are familiar with the historical Silk Road, but fewer people realize that the exchange of items, ideas, technology, and human genes through the mountain valleys of Central Asia started almost three millennia before organized trade networks formed. These pre-Silk Road exchange routes played an important role in shaping human cultural developments across Europe and Asia, and facilitated the dispersal of technologies such as horse breeding and metal smelting into East Asia. One of the most impactful effects of this process of ancient cultural dispersal was the westward spread of northeast Asian crops and the eastward spread of southwest Asian crops. However, until the past few years, a lack of archaeobotanical studies in Central Asia left a dearth of data relating to when and how this process occurred.

This new study, led by scientists from the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History, provides details of recently recovered ancient grains from the far northern regions of Inner Asia. Radiocarbon dating shows that the grains include the oldest examples of wheat and barley ever recovered this far north in Asia, pushing back the dates for early farming in the region by at least a millenium. These are also the earliest domesticated plants reported from the northern half of Central Asia, the core of the ancient exchange corridor. This study pulls together sedimentary pollen and ancient wood charcoal data with archaeobotanical remains from the Tiangtian archaeological site in the Chinese Altai Mountains to reveal how humans cultivated crops at such northern latitudes. This study illustrates how adaptable ancient crop plants were to new ecological constraints and how human cultural practices allowed people to survive in unpredictable environments.

The Lyding Group recently developed a technique that can be used to build carbon-nanotube-based fibers by creating chemical crosslinks. The technique improves the electrical and mechanical properties of these materials.

The paper, "Enhanced Electrical and Mechanical Properties of Chemically Cross-Linked Carbon-Nanotube-Based Fibers and Their Application in High-Performance Supercapacitors," was published in ACS Nano.

"Carbon nanotubes are strong and are very good at conducting heat and electricity," said Gang Wang, a postdoctoral research associate in the Lyding lab, which is at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. "Therefore, these materials have wide applications and can be used as strong fibers, batteries, and transistors."

There are many ways to build materials that have carbon-nanotube-based fibers. "Airplane wings can be made, for example, by embedding these fibers in a matrix using epoxy," said Joseph Lyding, the Robert C. MacClinchie Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and a Beckman faculty member. "The epoxy acts as a binder and holds the matrix together."

The real ‘paleo diet’ may have been full of toxic metals

But a new study suggests the food some early humans in Norway ate may have not only been unhealthy, but downright toxic. In some cases, these people may have consumed more than 20 times the levels of dangerous metals recommended for humans today.

“This study raises interesting ideas,” says Katheryn Twiss, an archaeologist at Stony Brook University who was not involved in the work. But, she notes, the findings are limited to a small number of animal remains from just a few sites, and therefore may not fully represent the diets of Norwegians from thousands of years ago.

Pollutants have been entering our food chain for millennia. In 2015, for example, researchers reported that cod caught off the North American coast around 6500 years ago by Stone Age hunter-gatherers contained high levels of mercury. This metal occurs naturally in Earth’s crust and is thought to have leached into the oceans in greater concentrations after sea level rise covered more land. Once in the water, fish absorb mercury through their gills and their food.

The researchers selected eight archaeological sites from the region, spanning 6300 to 3800 years ago. They did not study any human remains; instead, they analyzed the bones of dozens of Atlantic cod and harp seals found in ancient garbage pits. The majority of the cut marks on the seal bones suggest the animals were butchered for their meat, rather than simply skinned. Both species were among the main ingredients in the diet of the people who lived here, according to previous archaeological studies. The hunter-gatherers are also known to have eaten haddock, whale, dolphin, reindeer, and beaver.

The bones of the cod at these sites contained more than 20 times the maximum level of cadmium and up to four times the highest level of lead that the European Food Safety Authority considers safe in meat, the team reports in Quaternary International. Cadmium can cause kidney, liver, and lung disease, while lead can impair the brain and nervous system.

Seal bones at the sites contained up to 15 times the recommended levels of cadmium and up to four times the recommended levels of lead. The level of mercury—which can cause damage to the brain, kidneys, and immune system in humans—was also high in both animals.

As with the fish in the earlier study, the researchers believe rising sea level was responsible for the pollution in the food chain.

Egypt's Minister of International Cooperation Rania El-Mashat announced that some 23 million Egyptian women are the heads of households, accounting for 14 percent of Egyptian families.
El-Mashat’s statements came during her participation in the ministerial session titled ‘The Women Entrepreneurs Finance Initiative’ (We-Fi) as part of the Global Women Forum held in Dubai.

El-Mashat added that women’s economic, social, and political empowerment is an national priority for Egypt and has been supported with a number of initiatives, including the woman’s empowerment strategy 2030, which is the first initiative of its kind to be launched globally.

The minister also said that the International Cooperation Ministry has coordinated with development partners to support a number of projects that contribute to empowering women, including a project to stimulate entrepreneurship and create job opportunities at a cost of $200 million provided by the World Bank.

The project, according to El-Mashat, aims to increase the foundation capital and venture capital for emerging, small and medium sized enterprises.

In the middle of Egypt's Tahrir Square, more than fifty engineers and a thousand labourers in yellow hard hats have been working 24-hour shifts in a bid to finish the renovation of the famous landmark.

The government plans to turn the 150-year-old square into an open-air museum, with the project set to be finished by the end of this month.

The move is a major part of the development scheme for historic Cairo, which aims to transform it into a touristic archeological destination, especially with the state's plan to relocate government offices from Downtown Cairo to the New Administrative Capital from June.

A team of researchers has found an "engine of consciousness" in the brain — a region where, in monkeys at least, even a little jump start will make them wake up from anesthesia.

Consciousness is a mystery. We don't know for certain why creatures are sometimes awake and sometimes asleep, or which mechanisms in the brain are most important for a conscious state. In this new paper, though, researchers turned up some important clues. Using electrodes across the brains of awake and sleeping macaques, as well as macaques under different forms of anesthesia, the team found two key pathways in the monkeys' brains for consciousness. The researchers also found a specific brain region that seems to get those pathways going, like an engine they could start using some highly specialized jumper cables. That region is known as the central lateral thalamus.

Some say the vision of the four trees is related to the book of Daniel foretelling the fate of the four kingdoms to come. Connected to the vision of the four beasts. I did have one beast dream last night and the beast was fighting an intelligent backed machine. The beast did destroy the machine yet in doing so itself seemed mortally wounded. According to Dead Sea scrolls, they say tradition is tree stands for king or kingdom.

What's it like to see auroras on other planets?

But auroras aren’t unique to Earth and can be seen on several other planets in our solar system.

An aurora is the impressive end result of a series of events that starts at the sun. The sun constantly emits a stream of charged particles known as the solar wind into the depths of the solar system. When these particles reach a planet, such as Earth, they interact with the magnetic field surrounding it (the magnetosphere), compressing the field into a teardrop shape and transferring energy to it.

Each of the gas giants (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune) has a strong magnetic field, a dense atmosphere and, as a result, its own aurora. The exact nature of these auroras is slightly different from Earth’s, since their atmospheres and magnetospheres are different.

The unexpected auroras

On Venus and Mars, the story is different. While neither of these planets has a large-scale magnetic field, both have an atmosphere.

Using data from the Venus Express spacecraft, scientists found that this magnetic field stretches out away from the sun to form a “magnetotail” that redirects accelerated particles into the atmosphere and forms an aurora.

Artificial general intelligence (AGI) is the intelligence of a machine that can understand or learn any intellectual task that a human being can. It is a primary goal of some artificial intelligence research and a common topic in science fiction and futures studies. AGI can also be referred to as strong AI,[1][2][3] full AI,[4] or general intelligent action.[5] (Some academic sources reserve the term "strong AI" for machines that can experience consciousness.[6])

Some authorities emphasize a distinction between strong AI and applied AI[7] (also called narrow AI[2] or weak AI[8]): the use of software to study or accomplish specific problem solving or reasoning tasks. Weak AI, in contrast to strong AI, does not attempt to perform the full range of human cognitive abilities.

As of 2017, over forty organizations were doing research on AGI.[9]

That’s why machine learning tech is now in place because of the constant failure as a society in relieving issues abroad. ELIZA is an early natural language processing computer program created from 1964 to 1966[1] at the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory by Joseph Weizenbaum.[2] Created to demonstrate the superficiality of communication between man and machine, Eliza simulated conversation by using a 'pattern matching' and substitution methodology that gave users an illusion of understanding on the part of the program, but had no built in framework for contextualizing events.[3] Directives on how to interact were provided by 'scripts', written originally in MAD-Slip, which allowed ELIZA to process user inputs and engage in discourse following the rules and directions of the script. The most famous script, DOCTOR, simulated a Rogerian psychotherapist and used rules, dictated in the script, to respond with non-directional questions to user inputs. As such, ELIZA was one of the first chatterbots, but was also regarded as one of the first programs capable of passing the Turing Test.

Neuron Network Associative Memory Program[edit]
In 1987 John Walker of Fourmilab created a program for the C64 that was able to recreate a neural-network learning function using pattern-recognition[8]. Although the brain has ten billion neurons and ten trillion connections, in only 226 lines of BASIC Walker was able to create a very small pattern recognition algorithm using tens of neurons and thousands of connections. The program works by taking any pattern (letters are used) and establishing neural connections (mimicking synapses) between every pixel in the array (mimicking neurons). The program can then identify pre-learned patterns or make approximations of new patterns. It is successful for only two or three patterns before the program breaks down; however it clearly demonstrates AI through pattern recognition.

Can you link the videos. I can't watch unless it has a link.

I want to tell this before I forget.
I was in a vehicle that didn't seem to move on a road in a neighborhood. It was like we were just sitting there for some reason and the sky seemed normal for us. But then the sky opens in the shape of a vesica piscis, just the middle shape not the whole thing, and there are stars but they are in shapes of things. The big main one looked like a boxy man if I remember. Why this is going on I want to get out of the vehicle to take pictures and video. So I get out and sit on the curb. I put my hand down and felt something weird and put it to my mouth and it was nasty. I went back to the vehicle to wipe out my mouth and hand. And learned it was dog crap, yellowish. Then went back to proceed to film. The sky then opened all the way and the stars turned into cartoonish movielike beings dancing in the skies instead of stars. While trying to film, the reflection of the houses was messing with the phone I was filming on so I didn't get a good picture. Then this older woman approached me and told me that I needed to get back my the vehicle.

Weird huh, lol
