Viruses might not be alive, but they may be altering life on a global scale. Researchers have found that a bizarre group of microbes known as “giant viruses” contain genes associated with metabolism, which they likely use to convert their zombified hosts into supercharged energy factories. Because many of their victims are important players in dampening climate change and in controlling ocean ecosystems, the megaviruses may be exerting an unexpected power over life on Earth.

There are more than 200,000 kinds of viruses in the world’s oceans. Some are giant viruses, so named because they tend to be about 10 times bigger than the average virus. They’re still tiny—the largest is only one-fifth the size of a red blood cell—which may explain why they went undiscovered until 2003. Since then, researchers have learned some basic facts—the viruses mostly infect amoebas and phytoplankton, for example—but scientists are still trying to figure out what makes them tick.

In the new study, microbiologists led by Frank Aylward of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University didn’t scour the oceans. Instead, they went hunting in public databases, scanning thousands of mostly marine genomes for the DNA fingerprints of giant viruses.

Neter is the egyptian hieroglyphic symbol that many believe to be an axe, however in Francis Griffith’s book A Collection of Hieroglyphs: A Contribution to the History of Egyptian Writing (1898), he claims the ‘’ symbol is a bone with a roll of cloth wrapped around it, in other words a flag.

The word “Neter” translates as God, which could be interpreted as the flag being a symbolic representation of God:

Many cultures across the ages have practiced bizarre and grisly death rituals, but few did it better than the Scythians of ancient Siberia.

Over 40 years ago, archaeologists discovered this exceptionally creepy clay head among an ancient burial in Siberia. As if this artifact couldn't get much stranger, X-ray imaging of the head later revealed it contained a ram’s skull embedded deep inside.

The 2,100-year-old clay head was found alongside the charred remains of 13 to 15 people in 1968 by Soviet Professor Anatoly Martynov. Found in Minusinsk Hollow among mountains of South Siberia, the burial ground is thought to have belonged to Siberia’s Bronze Age Tagarsk culture.


The Tagarsk are among the best-studied groups of the eastern Scythian cultures, a term used to describe a group of nomadic warriors that raised hell across the entire length of the Eurasian Steppe from around 900 BCE to 200 CE. The culture was essentially the ancient equivalent of a motorcycle gang: tattooed nomads with mohawks that fearlessly patrolled the plains of Eurasian on horseback.

Much of what we know about this ancient culture has been learned through their grand burials, frequently dotted around the Eurasian Steppe and often laden with golden jewelry and weaponry. But even by their standards, this discovery was exceptional.

We’ve gone back to exploring the Qumran caves following Vendyl’s hunch that the Copper Scroll, which a Bedouin found in 1952 in Cave 3, may hold the key to the whereabouts of the Temple treasures.

The Scroll, written on copper rather than parchment, is an inventory of gold and silver treasures from either the First or Second Temple, with references to where the objects were hidden in the mountains above the Dead Sea.

Last month, using ground-penetrating radar, we surveyed a man-made tunnel in the vicinity of Cave 3, which we hope will reveal the treasures “under the stone steps” mentioned in the Scroll.

What are some of the more interesting items you’ve discovered in previous digs?

In 1988, we dug near Cave 11, where the Temple Scroll was found. Vendyl and the archeologist Yosi Patrick uncovered a small clay jug filled with a sticky substance that may have been the Anointing Oil mentioned in the Bible. It was analyzed and found to contain a large percentage of balsam. What was amazing was the fact that the oil was still sticky after 2,000 years.

Then, in 1992, Vendyl unearthed a 600-kilo cache of organic red power. A chemist at the Weizmann Institute and an American expert in pollens agreed that it was composed of nine different spices like those used to make the ancient ketoret that was burnt in the Holy Temple.
