Man I could fill pages but will try to keep it short.,... Just an example: An English friend of mine opened up a cafe, made a shitload of money and opened up a bigger place, it was the most successful place here in Bandung, so the (Christian) Chinese saw their discotheques empty and they got jealous . So they paid off some extremist groups to go and wreck the place and there they came with their banners that said No To Alcohol and they wrecked the place. That's how it works, and these groups are being used for the weirdest stuff, massage parlors and other places where sex is for sell? Most of them pay off these groups for protection (and I don't mean protection racket, really, protection)... Thugs, pimps etc. who used to stroll around in their leather jackets are now wearing full Islamic clothing. Not because they all of a sudden got religion but because the cops are scared to confront these types.... Normally they torture, murder and rape the shit out of anybody but not with these types :) When I started living here, 23 years ago, you didn't see headscarves (jilbab), not one, now I guess around 70 to 80% of women wear them. The former dictator Suharto, who was a murderous corrupt beast was good in one thing, he kept radical Islam out but since his downfall we became "democratic" and it just went downhill from then. Saudi Arabia and Kuwait have been pumping billions of dollars into the country and it had a terrible effect... Indonesian Islam is a very, very different thing, it's very much mixed with the old religions, Hinduism, Buddhism and animism, Wahhabism was always here but it was always a very small minority, usually brought by people who went on the Haj to Mekkah and came back all fired up.... Personally, I think it all comes down to poverty, having no future, being robbed of identity.... I used to do a lot of work here for handicapped children (with a Catholic organization) and I was doing quiet a bit of field work, often in the most poor areas around Jakarta and in far away villages in East-Java and I've seen how these people live, you can't even begin to imagine how terrible it is.... Often we would come to homes and there would be some handicapped kid lying around, all alone in their own vomit, piss and shit, and I would ask, where are the parents??? Well, mom is working as a hooker in some massage parlor in the big city and dad is off protesting and burning down a church somewhere for a bit of money, just so tragic... After a while I started to understand it all... You have nothing, nothing at all, no future and hungry kids and there's just no work to be found, and these extremist organizations come along and they offer you some money and some (Islamic) clothes to wear and much more important, they give you a voice, an identity. What would you do??? Try answering that one.... Personally, I don't follow any religion, non what so ever.... And Indonesia is an incredible country, I wouldn't want to live anywhere else anymore, the food, the people, the music, just incredible... I was back home in Holland a few weeks ago, couldn't believe how much things have changed, and not for the better, I wouldn't be able to function there anymore I think.... Sorry if I'm rambling a bit, it isn't easy to try to describe something that should take pages and pages in such a short piece :) Seeing a lot of reactions here, I'm not shocked, not offended, honestly, I couldn't give two fucks really, but I find it just... really, really simplistic I guess, feeling like it's not all that different from the whole Hegelian dialectic of the left vs the right, us vs them.... |
