that hit, now peaks at NUMBER TWO on the billboard charts, despite overwhelming evidence that it was once number one

My ear was glued to the radio back then as a kid and I knew every song and still do from that period. I do not recognize that song at all. The first Jackson 5 song I heard being played was I Want you Back, which was some months after. I seriously doubt I would not remember a song from that time period.

I watched a Jackson 5 documentary that talked about their songs that came out, I may look at that again. It seems they had one local hit in the Chicago area before I Want you Back, but it wasn't heard on national radio. Now I am curious about that song...
