I share your disdain for open caskets. The Korean people have a very beautiful tradition of visiting their parent's graves every year. They prepare a meal & honor their memory, & some drink rice wine over the grave (pouring a cup for the deceased). They speak to them too trusting their loved one hears them in heaven.

After seeing it done, it really made an impression on me. I don't cook any special meal but I do much the same for my father. Except for the wine thing - I'm not a drinker.
