Anonymous Coward User ID: 77118985 United States 12/02/2019 10:52 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Back when this styff was only from leaked info, we found out the cameras on smart tvs routinely sends videos of your family to a storage drive, scans your videos to identify personality traits of people around. And the creepy part, to identify when someone in your house shows signs of illness, both physical and mental, and have those notes of illness tagged to the profile made of your person. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77118985 Not that it matters lol |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 38357227 United States 12/02/2019 11:04 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | A family member that finally got this MSM memo. For years we’ve had knock down blow out arguments because I refused to get a smart tv. Was ridiculed for tape on cameras. Guess who’s finally taping their shit. No acknowledgement of previous convo’s. Just outrage on how bad things are....like it’s something new. Embarrassing |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 23369282 United States 12/02/2019 11:09 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | ...That's the key takeaway from the FBI's Portland field office, which just ahead of some of the biggest shopping days of the year posted a warning on its website about the risks that smart TVs pose. Quoting: Digital mix guy "Beyond the risk that your TV manufacturer and app developers may be listening and watching you, that television can also be a gateway for hackers to come into your home. A bad cyber actor may not be able to access your locked-down computer directly, but it is possible that your unsecured TV can give him or her an easy way in the backdoor through your router," wrote the FBI. The FBI warned that hackers can take control of your unsecured smart TV and in worst cases, take control of the camera and microphone to watch and listen in. Active attacks and exploits against smart TVs are rare, but not unheard of. Because every smart TV comes with their manufacturer's own software and are at the mercy of their often unreliable and irregular security patching schedule, some devices are more vulnerable than others. Earlier this year, hackers showed it was possible to hijack Google's Chromecast streaming stick and broadcast random videos to thousands of victims. Narcissistic millinial thought I was crazy and stupid adding extra security to my computer. Three months later it was a nightly news warning. I enjoyed rubbing his smug mug into that news story. |

Rosicrucian1 User ID: 70585940 Canada 12/02/2019 11:57 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Where are the cameras in them at? Quoting: Anonymous Coward 77936235 I thought they didn't have caneras. Why do they even have Mike's? Is that like fire TV's? I'm pretty sure mine (smarttv)does not have camera or mic but I will check it out today. I got it because it runs on apps like win10 and has the ability to use my home internet to download new tv apps. Hmmm. Interesting but if someone wants to watch me pick my ass or nose in my undies than...... the argument is that a speaker can function as a microphone, although they are not suited for this. Also the LED can be a camera, but both have to be powered up. the problem is that additional circuitry would need to be installed to do this and could be found, it is not just software needed or exploits for access. |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 75489966 United States 12/02/2019 11:59 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Every pc and cellphone is spyware, but oh no, the tv's!! Quoting: Anonymous Coward 76767630 Seriously, everyone I know has smart TV's now, they dominate every store. The best we can do is learn how to disable the mic, camera and wi-fi. Remove the implements and be happy. Thats what i have done with laptops for at least 10 yrs. Now. I open the bezel and disconnect the microphone and camera immediately. Our flat screen is old so not worried about it but we will need to upgade when it finally takes a shit. So how hard is it to open up a new smart tv and disable that shit, anyone here done that yet??? |
Anonymous Coward User ID: 78218253 United States 12/02/2019 12:05 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | FBI's Portland field office - And who wouldn't trust these people. After all the goodwill built up over the years. Thank you so much for the warning. How about telling the public where your next mass casualty event is taking place. Then I'll be impressed. For now. Not so much. I'll watch whatever the fuk I want. When I want. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 78198017 United States 12/02/2019 12:34 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | "Smart" = "Spy" What is it about that simple equation that people do not understand? Unfortunately I had to get a new TV this past spring ... all that was available with a decent picture were "Smart TV's". I bought one (Samsung) but it has never been connected to my router via it's built in wireless connection, and NEVER will be. Of course that means that certain functions do NOT work, but it still works OK as a "dumb" TV, which is fine for me. Ditto ... the reason I am still using my older ROKU box that does NOT have voice commands. In fact NOTHING in my house except my laptops and my cell phone have a working microphone in them, which is fine with me. I know I am still being spied upon by my phone, my internet provider, and possibly by my laptop, but at least those items are semi-controllable, unlike a smart TV, Siri, or other voice controlled products. |
