The Hollywood left in the 1950s & 1960s seemed to devote themselves to an agenda of trying to kill America's fascination with science, engineering, & space exploration. Consequently, they only tended to greenlight badly written sci-fi scripts & give them "B" film budgets. Nearly all the sci-fi from the early 60s up until Star Wars were so awful, I have a hard time naming good ones. There certainly was a fiery love & fascination for the subject, but a real agenda to throw a wet blanket over it. The real tragedy of that is that there were a lot of amazing fiction books in the genre that have vanished into obscurity (read a lot of them as a kid).

2001: A Space Odyssey & Star Wars were the 2 first Sci-Fi flicks to finally get a decent budget. George Lucas got all kinds of concessions from the studio to license the brand & merchandise toys because the studio execs had begun to believe their own lies about Sci-Fi. Lucas cashed in big.

Another one of the few good ones from back then is "The Day The Earth Stood Still," but you may like the remake with Keanu Reeves better. "The Blob" was another decent one.

"Seconds" (1966) with Rock Hudson.

It's one of those movies that stuck with me long after seeing it because it has a disturbing twist ending.

Forbidden Planet. No question the Best.

"On the Beach" (1959) is another excellent classic.

"Forbidden Planet" was superb, and is the flagship movie for 1950's sci-fi, IMO.

It set the standard for every sci-fi space movie and TV show which followed it.

I wouldn't presume to say "best", just top of my list - "Invasion of the Body Snatchers." from 1956.

The remake with Donald Sutherland in 1978 was surprisingly good.
