I just saw a job opening that says spanish speaking required

Probably working with a crew who only speaks Spanish. Is it construction, landscape, back of restaurant work? Chances are Spanish.

Such jobs have been around for a long time.

The whole thing is silly. Every other group of people who immigrated to America learned English. If I was to move to Russia would I expect everyone to learn English to accommodate me? Hell no that's just silly. Either speak English or get the fuck out of here.

spanish is a second language in US, Cali, Texas and few other states used to be part of Spain. nothing wrong with that.

I know a young woman who lives in Florida who interviewed for a medical sales job. She was always very successful in jobs in two other states before moving to Florida.

The interviewer told her that he would rather have someone who speaks English AND Spanish. Just damn!

Because the Spanish are now everywhere in the USA, and many don't speak English! It was NEVER like that prior to the GW Bush years. That's when I first noticed the cans and food boxes had English and Spanish. I remember thinking...

Now...doctors' offices, banks, hospitals, airline flight attendants, airline ticket agents, medical sales, real estate agents....

require Spanish/English speaking employees. Unbelievable.

It is a way to keep gringos out of certain positions. I also find the, "women and people of color or from historically disadvantaged backgrounds highly encouraged" to be even worse. I'd have more respect for these organizations if they just flat out said, don't apply if white and male.

All you conservatives on this forums seem to worship capitalism. Well this is capitalism in full force. It all comes down to what is going to make the business the most dollar, and they aren't going to make as much money with a gringo working for them who cannot speak Spanish if its a high Spanish speaking area like in California, Texas, or Arizona.

You people on this forum love capitalism, well, don't complain when businesses make choices that serve the dollar as the bottom line.

Why is it then that we (white Americans) so stubbornly refuse to even speak a second language?

In Europe, they learn the languages of their region, typically, I believe.

They learn the language of their country and also of the bordering country or countries.

We (white Americans) should just accept the reality of what is going on around us and assimilate to the languages spoken in our region.

For most of the states in the south west, that would be English and the regional Spanish dialect.

Many people dont seem to understand how America, at least for the time being, is clearly shifting socially, and culturally.

Sure other countries around the world have Signs written in various languages, but to have just about every product, phone service and jobs in another language as well as English is quite an eye opener.

I have nothing wrong with learning other languages, and yes people who typically speak multiple languages are said to be more intelligent. However aside from simply learning another language, its the fact of cultural and social shifting that is taking place. By force, design, or simply due to other trends.

I think the idea initially was, if you didn't plan to live outside the US then English and knowing it well, would be all you needed.

See, the whole idea of learning a second language is that, when you visit another country be it German speaking, Spanish speaking, French speaking etc, you can function generally speaking, or communicate with the people who live there.

The problem here is, those coming into the US are not doing THEIR part to learn our language. And for some dumb reason, it's perfectly acceptable it's expected that the US be the ONLY country that must cater to all people in THIER native tongues. Living in the southwest, I speak enough Spanish to get by, and I certainly appreciate those who are multi-lingual. However, in the US outside of some very specific roles, speaking Spanish should not be a requisite to jobs in construction, carpentry, or fast food service simply because the managers and or people they decided to hire can not communicate in English. Typically, those managers are looking for illegitimate workers not authorized to work here in the United States to begin with so...

I never thought I would see this in my lifetime. Never expected it!

Fairly common in the West. Nothing new. My husband got a job working for the welfare office 40 years ago because he could speak Spanish. It was required.

Has noting to do with racism, everything to do with communication. In the case above, he was mid-Western born mostly German ancestry with a degree in Languages.

Realistically speaking, it would be a waste of time for me to learn another language. It;s not like it is in Europe, when a couple of hour's drive puts you in another country, speaking another language. I would have to drive for 2 days minimum to get to another country where they speak a different language.

I've lived in the Southwest and never found it necessary to speak Spanish. Not once. Spanish was not the language spoken in the region. English was and is. At least a couple of years ago it was.
