It wasnt always this way, in free societies in ancient times you just had to work a few hours a day to bring food to your family and you would spend the rest of the time celebrating various holidays like harvest, solstice etc. Perhaps sometimes youd have to go to war, but in case you didn't come back your tribe/clan would take care of your family.
