Stores no longer paying attention to Shop Lifters and NOT stopping it via in store security and prosecution is leading more and more people to do it. The drug issue is just a smokescreen ... most companies now PROHIBIT their employees from stopping people who are actively shoplifting. Do that, ie: little risk of any punishment, and you just encourage more, and more, AND MORE of it. MORE shoplifting to come as companies do everything they can to keep their own employees from stopping it and they continue to NOT prosecute it. |

I believe it. As drug use gets worse, theft gets worse. Where I work part time we have a huge problem with theft. We can't catch them all. Most are regulars. They know we know them and they keep coming back. I'd say three fourths of them are addicts. You can see it. Our losses from theft are more than any of the stores in the Detroit area I've been told. So many more cars stolen in this area. Cars, anything not locked down, anything that can be sold. Even in my quiet little safe neighborhood. The police and everyone downplays it because tourism is huge and we can't run off the tourists. We've had several cars stolen from where I work, 6 this year, and every one of them has been recovered and returned...full of used needles. One we found and got back ourselves and it was full of clothes that had been shoplifted, dtug paraphernalia and used needles. Usually with a good bit of damage as well. We've had customers bring them in for service to have vehicles repaired that have been stolen and torn apart. This wasn't happening two and three years ago. It was rare. It's out of hand. These people aren't teenagers stealing lip gloss or make up for fun, they aren't homeless or broken people trying to steal a Coke and bag of chips to eat or feed their children. No. When you see them it is obvious by looking at them they are all addicts. |

MORE shoplifting to come as companies do everything they can to keep their own employees from stopping it and they continue to NOT prosecute it. The reason we can not confront them is liability. If there is no security or loss prevention, we can do nothing. We can not leave the store because once we walk through the doors, they are not responsible for us if we are injured or attacked. We do what we can. We follow them, hand out at the exits. Take armloads of clothes to hold at the register for them. We find stashes hidden near exits so they can grab it and run. We watch them get agitated when they realize they are cornered and won't get out, so they leave what they have and go. They walk around on their phones to whoever they are with trying to figure out how they're going to get out with the goods. We have had one girl scream at us at the top of her lungs crying racism and throwing things. No racism involved. She is a regular. In fact there are probably more whites than blacks doing the shoplifting. Employees are limited as to what they can do and say because it is a liability to the stores. And legally, you can't accuse them because as long as they are still inside they can say they just haven't paid for it yet, and you can't prove otherwise. The thing they do is have someone waiting at a door with the car running and just haul ass. That is the reason employees are told to not confront. |

It's true most stores don't even try to stop you for shoplifting anymore. I guess we can thank lawyers for that one. I even load up with stolen stuff down my pants and in my pockets when I go to Walmart. Sometimes I go to Walmart and just pick up a fishing rod and walk out the front door. |

I know a guy that can put in a request to the local meth heads to steal a bunch of DeWalt\Milwaukee tools to buy brand new unopened tools at a great great great price. Yes these people were mostly sucked into the world of gateway addictions due to the easy access of prescription pain pills and have now turned to meth but whatever they are willing to steal any and everything to support that. |
