I don't think the naive media has any idea what the Supreme Court is about to do to them with respect to gun control.

It's pretty obvious at this point with the solid 5-man majority they are looking for a good solid test case so they can apply Heller in a more wide fashion and declare a large slate of state laws unconstitutional. They already looked at one this term and it may not be solid enough to rule on, but there are dozens waiting in wing now and some of them are very solid cases to rule on.

In Heller, the Court decided that any firearm that was common and ordinary and not dangerous and unusual is constitutionally protected. They applied that general rule and said that handguns were constitutionally protected for basically everyone other than dangerous felons. Handguns are used in 50% of the nation's murders and yet they are not dangerous enough to be banned. Rifles are used in only 3% of the nation's murders and presumably AR-15s are just a subset of this number. AR-15s are the most popular rifle sold for the last 20 years. Obviously AR-15s are common and ordinary and not dangerous and unusual. So I see the very few state bans against semi-automatic long guns coming to an end quite soon and no more being passed.

The Court has also telegraphed that it considers the ability to carry a gun outside the home a right also. In fact, two of the circuit courts of appeal have already come to this conclusion - the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals forced Illinois to adopt concealed carry and the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals forced D.C. to adopt shall-issue concealed carry. There is SHALL-ISSUE concealed carry in D.C. because of court action today! Neither of these circuit courts of appeal are considered to be more conservative than the Supreme Court, so expect the Supreme Court to declare that the 2nd Amendment creates a right to bear arms outside the home and that right must be applied as a shall-issue right, changing the may-issue policy of about 8 states. Expect that the Court will also agree that the interstate commerce clause requires states to honor each other permits as well.

As well, I expect that the Supreme Court will overturn laws that make non-violent felonies a disqualifier to gun possession.

As far as other issues such as magazine capacity, bump stocks, waiting periods, etc., I don't know. They may allow it or may not, but the broad right for all non-violent citizens to keep and purchase more of all the guns that are available today and carry them in public is going to stay this way, and be expanded into the very few states that do not allow it now.
