Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78280229 TOXMAP, an interactive map hosted by the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and accessible to the public, allowed users to track pollution-producing factories and other environmental concerns such as superfund cleanup sites. However, on Dec. 16, all links to the application on the NLM's website were deprecated, following an announcement from the agency in September notifying users that the site would be "retired." Claudia Persico, an assistant professor at American University specializing in public administration and environmental policy, told Popular Science that the site's deprecation was a blow to researchers. "I think it’s really sad that they’re getting rid of this," she said. "It was stunning to me that the National Library of Medicine is actually retiring this pretty essential tool for our environmental right-to-know.” [link to thehill.com (secure)] Of course Trump shut it down. What you don't know won't hurt you, right? And he surely wouldn't want you tracking Monsanto's trail of pollution. |

Yes, it's there but all you get is rows and rows of chemicals and total numbers of locations. You cannot find any actual locations or track individual pollution-producing factories. Apparently that is what they don't want you to know. You can no longer access the TOXNET map which was where you could see all that and was located here: [link to www.nlm.nih.gov (secure)] The only explanation for its shutdown is it was "retired". |

Money talks. Thread: Monsanto donated big to Donald Trump and Trump owns stock in gmo companies so forget about protecting the American food supply |

It baffles me why Trump would want to shut it down. Full disclosure time: I'm an environmentalist. Back when the air in Hackensack smelled like rubber farts, and the pristine lakes in upstate NY were devoid of fish, I got really upset about it. But I thought environmental activists were impractical. I was a math and science nerd in love with ham radio and bicycling. First year of college, I took a short course called "Field Trips to Water and Wastewater Treatment Plants" offered by a visiting prof from New Zealand, and a couple weeks later switched from electrical engineering. I got a degree in Geography & Environmental Engineering. Took a year off. Bicycled twice across the US. Got a degree in Sanitary Engineering and Water Resources. I worked for 40 years doing what I though would make a difference. I had college friends who did the same, worked for EPA, and went into environmental law to fight the polluters. We're all retiring now, and each of us can look back, and look around. It wasn't enough. For every one of us, there were 10 people who didn't give a shit. And there was the rest of the world that just wanted to develop, for a more secure life, with better food and a place to sleep. Leave the campsite better than you found it, my Mom said. We tried. OK boomer? As for Trump, he is an ignorant, senile douchebag who knows less than nothing about the environment. |
