High up, these organizations probably answer to the same master, and to me this sounds like they are trying to get resources diverted to another area, or prevent resources from coming into an area, to spread things as thin as possible before launching their main retaliatory strike in Iraq or wherever they plan on responding to the killing of their hero.

BREAKING: According to Kenya military Spokesman Colonel Paul Njuguna, attack took place at around 5:30am, says attempt to breach security at Manda Air Strip was “successfully repulsed”. The bodies of 4 terrorists have so far been found, and airstrip is safe, per Col Njuguna.

The word came down suddenly in early January to the fifty or so U.S. troops stationed inside Camp Simba, a Kenyan naval base located on that country's sandy coast: Drop everything and pull everyone back inside the compound wire. Then they were instructed to immediately clear a couple acres of dense forest. Task Force 88, a very secret American special-operations unit, needed to land three CH-53 helicopters.

"We had everybody working nonstop," says Navy Lieutenant Commander Steve Eron, commander of Contingency Operating Location Manda Bay, a new American base in Kenya, including a dozen or so on-site KBR contractors. By the next day, every tree had been hauled off and the field graded and packed down using heavy machinery. The pad was completed in thirty-six hours.

Soon after, U.S. special operators flying out of Manda Bay were landing in southernmost Somalia, searching for survivors among the foreign fighters and Al Qaeda operatives just targeted in a furious bombardment by a U.S. gunship launched from a secret airstrip in eastern Ethiopia.

The 88's job was simple: Kill anyone still alive and leave no unidentified bodies behind.

A few weeks later, the president would announce the creation of a new regional command -- Africa Command -- that would commit U.S. military personnel to the continent on a permanent basis. The January operation would be, in effect, the first combat mission of Africa Command, and it would not go as planned.

Al-Shabab's connection to Iran goes back at least as far as 2006, when a report from the U.N. Monitoring Group on Somalia indicated that the Islamic Courts Union (ICU), the precursor to al-Shabab, sent fighters to Lebanon to aid Hezbollah against the Israelis in return for Iranian and Hezbollah funding, arms, and training. According to the
report:

During mid-July 2006 ICU sent an approximately 720-person-strong military force to Lebanon to fight alongside Hezbollah against the Israeli military. . . . A number of the fighters also remained in Lebanon for advanced military training by Hezbollah. Furthermore, between 8 and 10 September 2006, about 25 Somalis returned to Somalia accompanied by five members of Hezbollah. . . . In exchange for the contribution of the Somali military force, Hezbollah arranged for additional support to be given to ICU by the Governments of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Syrian Arab Republic, which was subsequently provided."

What is common in World Wars is that numerous conflicts go hot because everyone starts taking advantage of the chaos to start some of their own for their own reasons.

Germany and Japan were not allies in the true sense of the word during WWII, they did sign the tripartite or something as basically a deterrent to make the US think twice about entering the war.

So if you want indications of WWIII breaking out look for news of security agreements where the parties to it can't really support each other directly but promise to start some shit if the other party is hit.

Al-Shabab is aligned with Al Qaeda and Ayman al-Zawahiri. Nothing to do with Iran. The Iran general was kicking Al Qaeda's ass before Trump assassinated him.
