MAN'S BLOOD AND SEMEN FOUND TO CONTAIN ONLY DONOR'S DNA AFTER BONE MARROW TRANSPLANT

by Hannah Osborne on 12/10/19 AT 6:50 AM EST

man's blood and semen has been found to contain only the DNA of a donor following a bone marrow transplant that took place years earlier. Tests showed that only the hair on his chest and head had not been altered by the donor DNA—a discovery that could have big implications for forensic science.

"I thought that it was pretty incredible that I can disappear and someone else can appear," Long told the New York Times.

Long, who worked at the Washoe County Sheriff's Office, was suffering from acute myeloid leukemia and myelodysplastic syndromes and had been scheduled to have a bone marrow transplant. One of his colleagues, Renee Romero, suggested he take DNA samples ahead of the operation to see what changes would take place.

"[I said] we need to swab the heck out of you before you have this procedure to see how this DNA takes over your body," she told the newspaper.

Just three months after the operation, tests showed how the DNA in his blood had been replaced with his donors. And the changes continued over time. Samples taken from his tongue, cheek and lip all contained donor DNA. Four years after the transplant, the team found his semen only contained DNA from his donor—a man from Germany. "We were kind of shocked that Chris was no longer present at all," Darby Stienmetz, from the Washoe County Sheriff's Office, told the Times.

Re: DNA from donor can take over and replace your DNA! RE: Bone Marrow transplants!
Long had a vasectomy after the birth of his second child. However, if he had not and were to father a child, whose DNA would be passed to the baby? Experts told the newspaper it should not be possible for someone to pass on another person's genes. Dr Mehrdad Abedi, from the University of California, Davis, who treated Long, said the vasectomy may be why the semen ended up containing the donor DNA. However, he said they plan to investigate the case further.

Long's case is unusual. While almost 23,000 bone marrow or umbilical cord blood transplants took place in the U.S. in 2017, according to the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), few patients would have collected their DNA before and after to this extent.

His case was presented at an international science conference in September and has gained interest among researchers, raising questions about forensic evidence at crime scenes. According to the newspaper, there have been several cases where DNA evidence did not add up and it later emerged a person involved had had a bone marrow transplant.

The finding has the potential to add another element to the weight placed on forensic evidence in the legal system—something that has been criticized for decades. Writing for theconversation.com, Jessica Gabel Cino, from Georgia State University, says "forensic science far outpaces the amount of trust it deserves."

For Long, while his cells may have been replaced with those of another person, there should be no harmful impact. "Their brain and their personality should remain the same," Andrew Rezvani, from the Blood & Marrow Transplant Unit at Stanford University Medical Center, told the Times.

I was thinking that, if this is true, "criminals" can
make their DNA 'vanish' by getting a transplant of bone
marrow and not be 'connected' to a crime as long as there
is no other physical evidence of your presence.

This also means you can't have kids after you get a
transplant because it won't be yours.

If this happens more often than not, people, both donor and recipient, need to know, so they can decide if they wish to have their DNA used, or replaced, as a consequence of the marrow transplant.

I have zero issues with this as long as all parties involved are fully aware, and choose to proceed, in full knowledge.

This is fascinating if true, especially if it's across the board. Now I'm curious to know if this has happened in other procedures like transfusions, transplants, etc. AND why certain people are unable to be recipients. Blows my mind to think that OUR DNA can essentially be instructed to STOP producing its own & begin producing the new strain.

Yet the consciousness of the individual remains and I would argue that if you need bone marrow you are to the point you will be physically dead soon. They don't just replace bone marrow on a whim.

So I guess if a terminal disease like leukemia you can fear a bone marrow transplant if you want, but then you most likely will not survive much longer anyway.

It is an interesting piece of information though OP.

They would still love the children as their own, but yes, they and the kids need to know, as well as the donor. If the donor has any genetic propensity for certain diseases/conditions, the kids need to know for their own sake, as well as to make an informed choice about whether they wish to have children.

I guess the upside is this could lessen the chances of the kids developing cancer.

Another question: If this happens every time, does the recipient have a far lesser chance of the cancer recurring? Maybe a positive unintended consequence?

What about women? Does the DNA of their eggs change? Women are born with all the eggs they will ever have, so will this change the DNA of the eggs? Or does it only impact sperm, as sperm is produced as needed in the male body?

What if a man/woman receives the donation from a person of the opposite sex? Will their DNA change gender? (Not trying to get the gender switchers all happy here)

It’s ALL Memory.

DNA within the Human Container (and all containers) are being edited all of the time by viruses. Of course, there are the “naturally” occurring mutations (edits) every day from oxygen, eating (and other metabolic processes), etc. The DNA one has today is not the same DNA he was born with. I'm going to say this one time only.

Aborted baby parts are being sprayed into the atmosphere and being put into the food supply.

They are changing the planet.

My uncle worked on the projects and it's real. Those planes are remote control - the trails aren't just aluminum and barium... and that grocery or takeout fast food & soda isn't just deep fried foods... it's their bioengineered blood...

Most humans seem to be hyper focused on the body and trying to maintain it in some sort of optimal way through natural or pharm medicine:

While they hyper focus on the body - the DNA is constantly being edited whether it be from organ transplants or viruses or oxygen or metabolic processes such at eating food - even “natural” food.
