Yes, Mohammed Mossadegh was the last Iranian leader elected by the Iranian people. The Shah Mohammed Pahlavi inherited his position from his father, Reza Shah, in 1941 and was the second Iranian "King" but was largely ineffective as a leader until Mossadegh was ousted in 1953.

Mossadegh made the mistake of trying to nationalise Iran's petroleum industry and it was actually the British SIS who led the coup d' état, although the CIA heavily assisted them in the process. This in effect opened the door for the Shah to become a dictator of Iran, whereas previously his role was more ceremonial in nature.

The Shah undertook a program of drastic modernisation of Iran but in the process gradually became too close to the US, Britain and Israel, upsetting the rest of the Muslim world. In addition, he steadily pushed Shiite Islamic law and culture more and more into the background, which alienated a large minority of the Iranian population.

It was actually the "Deep State" that saw what was happening and engineered the overthrow of the Shah and the installation of the Islamic Republic, in an effort to maintain influence in the face of opposition to the Shah. Recall the the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini was living comfortably in exile, in France prior to his return to Iran after the Shah fled the country. This like this don't just happen, there is always a shadowy force behind the scenes pulling the strings.
