It looked like it just kept going and going in the darkness.

It'll be pretty crazy and officially doomy if it's still erupting when the sun comes up?

Thickish ash fall over everything outside right now where I am in Rizal, up north, which you would think is far from the eruption site. Also I feel a mild but disturbing hot, thick something in the air as it enters my throat. Hoping it's psychosomatic but I don't think so... If you stand outside, you could actually feel the ash falling all over you. Oh, shit!

This will be VEI3 at least, next few hours crucial, if the eruption will not lessen we are looking at potential VEI 6 cataclysm over the whole Luzon. NOT GOOD.

I'm up in Nueva Ecija, about 100 mi (160 km) North of Taal super volcano. Taal lake is actually a large caldera. Metro Manila is only 50 mi (80 km) North of Taal super volcano. Reports of ashfall occurring in Quezon City. NAIA (Manila International Airport) is currently closed. Flights being diverted to Clark Field or other regional airports.

There were dozens of earthquakes in Batangas province in 2019. Several months ago, I told my wife that Mt. Taal is awakening with all the recent earthquakes.

3? The 1911 eruption was 3.7.

One of the more devastating eruptions occurred in January 1911. During the night of the 27th of that month, the seismographs at the Manila Observatory commenced to register frequent disturbances, which were at first of insignificant importance, but increased rapidly in frequency and intensity. The total recorded shocks on that day numbered 26. During the 28th there were recorded 217 distinct shocks, of which 135 were microseismic, while 10 were quite severe. The frequent and increasingly strong earthquakes caused much alarm at Manila, but the observatory staff was soon able to locate their epicenter in the region of Taal Volcano and assured the public that Manila was in no danger, as Taal is distant from it some 60 km (37 mi) away.[30]

In Manila, in the early hours of 30 January 1911, people were awakened by what they at first perceived as loud thunder. The illusion was heightened when great lightning streaks were seen to illuminate the southern skies. Those who investigated further, however, soon learned the truth. A huge, fan-shaped cloud of what looked like black smoke ascended to great heights. It was crisscrossed with a brilliant electrical display, which the people of Manila perceived as lightning. This cloud finally shot up in the air, spread, then dissipated, and this marked the culmination of the eruption, at about 2:30 a. m.[27]

On Volcano Island, the destruction was complete. It seems that when the black, fan-shaped cloud spread, it created a blast downward that forced hot steam and gases down the slopes of the crater, accompanied by a shower of hot mud and sand. Many trees had the bark shredded and cut away from the surface by the hot sand and mud blast that accompanied the explosion, and contributed so much to the loss of life and destruction of property. The fact that practically all the vegetation was bent downward, away from the crater, proved that there must have been a very strong blast down the outside slopes of the cone. Very little vegetation was actually burned or even scorched.[27] Six hours after the explosion, dust from the crater was noticeable in Manila as it settled on furniture and other polished surfaces. The solid matter ejected had a volume of between seventy million and eighty million cubic metres (2.5×109 and 2.8×109 cubic feet) (VEI = 3.7). Ashes fell over an area of 2,000 square kilometres (770 square miles), although the area in which actual destruction took place measured only 230 square kilometres (89 sq mi).[27] The detonation from the explosion was heard over an area more than 600 miles (970 km) in diameter.[30]

This volcano can have extremely massive eruptions, the caldera is huge, about 20 km, but they are very rares fortunately. It can also make big (not supervolcanic but large, ~VEI 6) eruptions. Last one was 5000 years ago.

Lake Taal is actually a huge caldera and classified as a complex volcano similar to Yellowstone. There were dozens of earthquakes last year in Batangas province, which is where Taal is located.

DOST-PHILVOCS just issued an update, they have upgraded Taal status to Alert Level 4 (on scale of 5 being highest). In other words, another eruption is imminent.

All GLP'ers in Philippines stay safe. I'm in Nueva Ecija (Cabanatuan) about 100 mi (160 km) North of Mt. Taal. Areas of Metro Manila is about 50 mi (80 km) North of Mt. Taal and many reports of ashfall around area.

NAIA airport is currently closed and flights being diverted to either Clark Field or other regional airports.

Ashfall right know is probably not that big and local to the nearest surroundings of volcano. Thanks for updates, stay safe.

btw, what you can see on the satelitte is mainly cloud that is product of intense heat, steam, gasses coming from the vent. The red area does not represent the volcanic ash/pyroclastic cloud.

The largest lake is inside a large volcanic caldera that was produced hundreds of thousands of years ago by a catastrophic eruption by a supervolcano that was thousands of times larger than Krakatua. Inside the lake is a smaller volcano and lake with a small island topped by a relatively new volcanic crater.

Taal is only 1,000 feet tall but don't let its small size deceive you. It has a deadly history. The worst of its numerous eruptions killed thousands of people in 1754

It was a supervolcano long ago of course that I knew, I said it's not a supervolcano on the current context of Taal and wiki doesn't list it as a current supervolcano. Mayon is much more memorable to me, as it was hyped more at school back then.

But we'll see, a VEI6 is within DOOM levels.
