Several Batangas towns on lockdown amid ashfall from Taal

MANILA - (2nd UPDATE) The Batangas local governments of Lemery, Agoncillo, and Laurel shut off their towns on Wednesday amid continued ashfall following Taal Volcano's Sunday eruption.

Agoncillo Mayor Daniel Reyes said he ordered a lock down at 1 p.m. while Laurel Mayor Joan Amo closed the area at 5 p.m.

Lemery was placed under lockdown at 6 p.m. except Barangays Gulod, Arumahan, Talaga, Payapa Ilaya, Mayasang, Niugan and some portions of Brgy. Payapa Ibaba, said Lemery Mayor Eulalio Alilio.

"May mga ilan [na barangay] naman na mataas-taas po," he told radio DZMM.

Talisay town has been closed since Tuesday.

During the lockdown period, residents are not allowed to return to their homes. The government has set up evacuation centers in nearby towns.

Phivolcs: Taal’s main crater drained of water, as new fissures found

MANILA—The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Wednesday afternoon said satellite images of Taal Volcano showed that the crater lake has been drained of water.

New vent craters were also seen inside the northern part of the main crater.

“We received satellite images from our partner organization USGS (United States Geological Survey) showing the water vaporized, it disappeared from the main crater lake,” said Mariton Bornas, chief of Phivolcs' volcano monitoring and eruption prediction division.

“The new configuration now at the main crater is that there are separate vents where fumes and ash are released.”

Bornas said the drying up of the main crater lake is considered normal during heightened volcanic activity since fissures also appear on the volcanic island.

Asked if the new fissures are a sign that an explosive eruption is about to happen, Bornas said: “The potential for an explosive eruption, based on our parameters, (we look at) mainly the earthquake activity.”

“It has not stopped. The earthquakes keep on coming. And they are considerable in magnitude for a volcanic earthquake so (it means that) magma is still rising,” she added.

Bornas said her group is also waiting for the new sulfur dioxide measurements to see if it has spiked, which would mean that magma is coming up to the surface.

"This map is the worst case scenario map which is typical of the 1754 eruption. We have considered various eruption centers on the volcano island and based on the mapping that we conducted on the 1754 deposits, we came up with the hazard map for the base surge or the pyroclastic density current," Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology's executive director Renato Solidum said.

OMG all those people who were just days ago surrounded by lush greenry and filming the Volcano.
I knew the images were eventually going to come back and this was going to be the result - how could it not. I am afraid for Manilla - this is such a densely populated area and this is not like having time to get out before a hurricane. Getting out will be complicated so much by these horrible conditions. God help them.
