I have lived here for most of my life and work for the media. I don’t think it’s a big deal. Probably related to cybersecurity like they said.

I've lived here for all my life also, I have family in the media here, I have connections in local government and everyone is saying this is very out of the ordinary and especially concerning since they had SEPARATE MEETINGS!

There are many local possible local targets for terrorism that most people dont think of,for example there are multiple businesses that if attacked could easily injure or kill 7-10k people any day of the week and would also damage the economy, I'm not naming locations for obvious reasons but think manufacturing plant type things

Honestly, I think it is a precautionary meeting so we aren’t attacked by ransomware like many other City and State governments have been recently.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 583787

Lmao.

Yeah, bussed to a secure location without staff to discuss how to prevent ransome ware attack.

No.

And briefed separately.

Question, are there still many, many nuclear missiles in Kansas in the ground pointed at enemies?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 74603221

No. We only had a dozen (at most) missile silo's during the 60's. They are all decommissioned and to my knowledge sold to private owners. One in Concordia is being made into a survival bunker resort, another one just serves as a neat tourist attraction, another had a school built over it...those are the three I have direct knowledge off in NE Kansas at least.

I'm glad you brought up SubTropolis since it's an amazing, yet little-known facility that was actually built by KC-Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt.

That place is massive and really defines description since it's still growing, even today with it's 500,000 square feet of active space. The USPS even uses it as their only storage facility for all commemmorative stamps, right long with major global corporations who house their most valuable documents there.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security is giving Kansas legislators extraordinary private briefings about undisclosed security issues.

Kansas House members boarded National Guard buses Tuesday for a briefing at a former Air Force base south of Topeka involving DHS and arranged by Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt’s office. Democrats had a separate briefing first, followed by Republicans.

Those are on the Missouri side of kansas city, there are some mass cave systems I used to have a boat stored in a part of the cave system from the video, thers lots of cool underground stuff under KC, but like others have mentioned those are on the Missouri side. I'll be interested to see if there is a similar emergency meeting in Missouri, if not then I would rule out anything to do with the chiefs or anything in the KC downtown area because most of it is on the Missouri side

One of the BIGGEST secrets they pulled off is the relocation of the former Plum Island facilities to just outside Manhattan KS.

Plum Island was where the U.S. researched animal diseases, but it's labs are better known as hosting research in biological warfare from the 60's-90's. In the film SILENCE OF THE LAMBS it's also where the FBI offered to relocate Hannibal Lecter if he cut them a deal!

The new, sprawling Kansas compound -which is called the National Bio and Agro-Defense Facility [the NBAF]- is under the direct control of the DHS and construction of two main labs and support systems had already been completed by 2017... all very quietly and under the radar. The facility houses a Bio-Level 3 lab which is just one step below the most secure there is. This construction has been kept so secret that most Kansans have no idea it's even there! The last I heard -just last year- indicated the facility was ahead of schedule but wasn't yet fully-operational... but it should be very close by now.

Since the DHS called the secret meetings of those KS lawmakers, I'm wondering if perhaps the NBAF was discussed right along with cyber-security as has been reported.

The bus was likely use because it was the only way to guarantee no electronic monitoring was occurring. They may have even used disturbance/blocking signals to prevent the lawmakers from recording anything themselves.

The partisan part only makes sense for two reasons:

1 - They couldn't fit enough people on one bus at the same time so they split them in the most natural way possible

2 - Something is happening that results in different impacts to each party. Something such as high level arrests in one particular party where either the message is different for each or there would be expected infighting thus drawing attention from the media and creating a "Breaking News" story.
I'm not from Canada, not that there's anything wrong with that.....

If it's secret then it's a terribly kept one. It's literally within eyeshot of Snyder Stadium. You probably see it on a broadcast of their football games. There are also reports on it in the paper quarterly and to public meetings.

Not to say there isn't some shenanigans going on there, but just saw that and had to laugh.

Did pick up the local Topeka Capital Journal when I was out and it had a couple of nuggets.

-The meeting was requested by the Governor, organized by the Attorney General, and given by the State National Guard Head. "Understanding the nature of these issues will increase awareness and prevent potential security missteps."

-The meetings lasted two hours each. WHile they did cover cybersecurity one legislator said it was a broad range of topics they went over.

-The Democrats quoted said it was very dull and one said "90% of it could have been covered in an Email."

-Only the Republican House Speaker was quoted and he said it was something he'd been requested of several times by the AG/Governor and in the interest of security went ahead with it.

You can laugh all you want, but the fact remains that in most KS media -including that here in Wichita- have seriously under-reported this facility. The last time I remember it got any press locally was due to the public protests in Manhattan PRIOR to its construction. Once it was clear the compound was going to be built regardless of the outcry, they calmed down considerably, the media coverage all but vanished and that's how it remains today.

And it makes no difference whether the facilty can be seen from Snyder stadium or not as long as the general public is kept completely ignorant of the research being done there... just as they were for forty years at Plum Island.

If I were talking to her in person I'd get the read of "She believes what she says but wonders if there was more to it." or "She's lying and is not used to it, but is being coerced to."

This is likely due to regionalization. I never hear anything about Wichita news. If I do it is usually about the Shockers or something to do with Boeing. NBAF rarely even makes the Topeka paper.

While the exact details haven't been made public (and honestly shouldn't, you don't need to know when each virus is being transported), they have kept locals updated on the timeline for the activation of the facility.

Last month the Manhattan Mercury reported that the Sentate passed guidelines on it's opening. Saying it should come online sometime in 2022 or 2023.

Yeah that'd be up there on the list of probabilities. Definitely top 3. Maybe there needs to be some special activities done to prepare the K-State campus infrastructure as they expand around the facility. Also a lot of work going on expanding the fiber network between Kansas City and Manhattan the last year or so. Maybe there is a push by DHS to put some special servers in the Salt Mines down in Hutchinson (same principle as the KC subterra described earlier in the thread.) and need some nudging for State permission.

Could be many things at this point. Have to wait and see if any special new legislation comes up, and what the state senators have to say.

What you stated only reinforces my assertion that the public is being kept largely out of the loop regarding the NBAF. I've been following this facility closely since I'm a retired federal employee whose final three years were spent as the USPS Bio-Hazard Specialist for the entire state of Kansas. I can assure you that you would cringe if you knew the volume of bio-hazards that routinely pass through the Manhattan testing labs on the campus of KSU. I sent hundreds of pounds there myself during my tenure that was tested for everything from Rabies to Anthrax and both Mad Cow and Lyme Disease. If a farmer out in Western Kansas thought his herd was infected I was the one who handled the entire Bovine head he'd send to Manhattan for evaluation. My Bio-Hazard Unit at the Wichita P&DC was the only one between Kansas City and Denver so it all passed through my hands. BTW: those existing KSU labs were one small factor in choosing the Manhattan site in the first place.

As I indicated above, it's my understanding that the NBAF construction is well ahead of schedule and these recent briefings could very well be an official heads up to local lawmakers.

Very interesting. I'll bow to your experience then but keep an eye on the local paper and scutttlebutt. I've heard some stories along the lines of what you say. Even if it isn't accurate it still is something. I keep it in my mind because even if there isn't much proof that could be gathered to support it, something down the line could click with it.

Like this one while talking to you. When they were poring concrete I remember one of the workers saying it was taking a lot more than it should have for some of the holes to fill. They wrote it off at the time as possibly a change in the plans to try and earthquake proof the facility. This was a concern due to the reinforcing of Tuttle Creek Dam at the same time the facility was breaking ground. It was not reported as a change in any article I read and another worker said they hauled off more soil than they expected the job to take in their several years of working that career.

Either article isn't much but it could support what you are saying. The year in review artcle I found said that only about 350 workers are currently working on finishing the facility down from 650 at the start of 2019. Doesn't document any "secret" workers but gives an idea of where they are at.

Maybe I'll have to take a jaunt over that way at some point and see what there is to see. If memory serves there is a paved trail path that leads around the outside edges of it to the north and west.

It's good to know there's a GLP'er in the area to keep an eye on that facility because I can assure you that when there's a news blackout initiated by the federal government, outlets DO comply with no hesitation by releasing disinfo if anything at all.

During my tenure, in addition to routinely handling infectious agents I also dealt with a wide variety of toxic compounds [one sent me to an ER at 3am due to leakage - thank God I caught it before it went any further] and even explosives... several years ago Wichita had a rash of mailbox bombings that never made it into the news. Five events and not a single word made it out into the public because we clamped the lid down fast and tight.

So, citizens like yourself are invaluable when it comes to facilities such as the NBAF.

Keep up the good work!
