Satellite measured ground deformation around Taal volcano indicates tens of cms of mostly up (towards the satellite) movement for the southern half of the caldera and down for the northern half

Having read all the links etc it seems to be behaving like the 1911 eruption which was also in January.

There were fissures like there are here and it seemed to calm down for a couple of days. SO2 shot up during this calm period (SO2 has shot up on 15th Jan) then there was an explosive eruption 2 days later.

Next 24/48 hours will be interesting.

After the phreatic eruption last Sunday and its continuous volcanic activity, the picture perfect features of Taal Volcano has changed. Compared to the photo taken by @ruthcabal15 last December, the famed Taal volcanic lake has disappeared in the drone photo I took today.

00 volcano icon for bulletin Activity in the Main Crater in the past 24 hours has been characterized by steady steam emission and infrequent weak explosions that generated dark gray ash plumes 100 to 800 meters tall and dispersed ash southwest to west of the Main Crater.

Existing fissures identified in barangays of Lemery, Agoncillo, Talisay, and San Nicolas in Batangas Province have been observed to widen by a few centimeters. A steaming fissure has been newly observed on the northern slopes of Taal Volcano Island. Receding of the shoreline has been observed around the whole of Taal Lake.


The Philippine Seismic Network plotted a total of six hundred thirty-four (634) volcanic earthquakes since 1:00 PM, January 12, 2020. One hundred seventy-four (174) of these registered at magnitudes M1.2 – M4.1 and were felt at Intensities I – V. Since 5:00 AM on January 16, 2020 until 5:00 AM today, there were sixty-five (65) volcanic earthquakes plotted, two (2) of these registered at magnitudes M1.3 -M3.1 and were both felt at Intensity I. The Taal Volcano Network recorded nine hundred forty-four (944) volcanic earthquakes including twenty-nine (29) low-frequency earthquakes. Such intense seismic activity likely signifies continuous magmatic intrusion beneath the Taal edifice, which may lead to further eruptive activity.


Alert Level 4 still remains in effect over Taal Volcano. This means that hazardous explosive eruption is possible within hours to days. DOST-PHIVOLCS strongly reiterates total evacuation of Taal Volcano Island and high-risk areas as identified in the hazard maps within the 14-km radius from Taal Main Crater and along the Pansipit River Valley where fissuring has been observed. Residents around Taal Volcano are advised to guard against the effects of heavy and prolonged ashfall. Civil aviation authorities must advise pilots to avoid the airspace around Taal Volcano as airborne ash and ballistic fragments from the eruption column pose hazards to aircraft. DOST-PHIVOLCS is continually monitoring the eruption and will update all stakeholders of further developments.

Cite your source. The latest briefing at the PDRRMO/NDRRMC by DOST-PHILVOCS at 8 PM made no such statement. It still remainsa at Alert Level 4 as of 5 PM PHT.

In regards to the water gone from the Mt. Taal volcano, that is expected after all the eruptions have occurred during the past few days. Lake Taal water level remains the same. There is a possible chance of a tsunami event on Lake Taal if part of Mt. Taal volcano collapses into Lake Taal.

The PNA/PNP (Army/National Police) have evacuated people from surrounding towns to evacuation centers and sealed of the area.

The DOST-PHILVOCS expects further minor to moderate eruptions to occur for the foreseeable future (weeks). The Mt. Taal volcano is not capable of producing more than a VEI-4 eruption at worst case. Mt. Pinatubo eruption (VEI-6) in 1991 was a 1000x more powerful and 100x more powerful than the 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens.

Mt. Taal is competing with Mt. Mayon (also on Luzon) for best picture of volcanic eruption.

You fear mongers call me anything you want. Especially the AC's who peddle their click bait threads and hype. The Philippine government is doing its best to handle the situation and minimize risk to citizens.

By far, the biggest threat is the "Valley Fault" that runs between Lake Taal to Mt. Pinatubo It is capable of producing a 7+ mag EQ and when (not if) it goes, it will nothing less than a biblical level disaster.

Please continue your armchair doom predictions from mommy's basement. We have things under control here.
